Celebrating Volunteers' Week at Virgin Media

It’s Volunteers’ Week and we’re celebrating the hundreds of generous Virgin Media volunteers across the UK and Ireland who give their time to make good things happen for good causes.

We’re proud to give our people one working day a year to volunteer for a cause close to their heart. And in 2016, over 930 volunteer days were taken by Virgin Media people. What’s more, many choose to give their own time as and when they can. All of them have a huge impact on the causes they care about.

For lots of Virgin Media employees, that’s our charity partner Scope. Together, we believe digital makes good things happen. For the 13 million disabled people in the UK, technology can be transformational. Providing a voice, enabling people to live independently and unlocking access to education and work. Our volunteers work to help make that a reality.

Take Sophie Bannerman, for example. She was one of 64 graduates and interns who took part in Scope’s shop challenge in December last year, with impressive results. Eight teams each volunteered their time to take over the running of a Scope shop, fundraising a combined total of more than £3,800, and donating 162 bags of stock worth £3,240.

And it’s not just our graduates and interns who get stuck in to lend a helping hand. Donna Ward, Customer Relations Executive from Stockton, led a team of Virgin Media volunteers who gave Scope’s Bishop Auckland and Darlington shops a makeover. The Shop Managers gushed about how helpful they were in transforming their back office space, including painting their toilet facility, weeding the jungle in their garden, and sorting overflowing stock. In true Virgin Media fashion, our team had fun with their Scope colleagues and customers, even setting up a tombola for the day!

“It’s important our people are able to support the causes that matter to them,” says Katie Buchanan, our Head of Sustainability. “Not only does it benefit the local organisation they’re helping, but it benefits us and the individual, too. Our people come back from volunteering refreshed and enthused, with an open minded and generous attitude that helps create a great work environment.”

Volunteers’ Week is an annual celebration of the fantastic contribution millions of volunteers make across the UK. It takes place 1 – 7 June every year.
