A couple of years ago, you might have thought of Jake Paul as a YouTuber and entrepreneur who did a bit of boxing on the side. Now, although he’s still a big star on YouTube, there’s no doubt about it: he’s a boxer.
Combat sports website Bloody Elbow has done the sums and calculated that Paul has earned more than $61 million (£45 million) from boxing since his first fight in 2020. Sports business publication Sportico put him 52nd in its 2025 ranking of the world’s highest-paid athletes, ahead of golfer Bryson DeChambeau, footballer Kevin De Bruyne, NFL star Travis Kelce and other huge names.
With hordes of fans paying their hard-earned cash to watch him fight, he’s not just a boxer – he’s one of the biggest boxers around. Like Floyd Mayweather and Marvin Hagler before him, Paul is pure box office. And he’s putting his record and reputation on this line again this weekend when he takes on former world champ Julio César Chávez Jr – a fight you can watch live on DAZN with Virgin Media, starting at 1am on Sunday 29 June. Here’s what you need to know ahead of this massive event.
What’s the background to this fight?
)
Paul started out against other YouTubers, MMA stars and part-time fighters, but always maintained that he wanted to be a serious boxer, and has genuine ambitions to be a world champion. The first time he faced a pro boxer – Tommy Fury, cousin of former world champ Tyson (and Love Island star) – he lost. But since then, he’s beaten pros Andre August and Ryan Bourland, and then last November he got in the ring with former world heavyweight champ Mike Tyson.
Considering Tyson was 58 and not in great shape (he had to postpone from the original date because of an ulcer), this fight was more about the box office. But because Paul had to step up a weight, his training was arduous, and he was rewarded with a unanimous points victory and a fight against another former world champion
Julio César Chávez Jr has been described as one of the most famous names in boxing – a kind of backhanded compliment. It’s the man who shares his name, his father Chávez Sr, who’s the true legend, a world champ at three weights with a place in the International Boxing Hall of Fame. But Chávez Jr is legit. He won the WBC middleweight title in 2011 and defended it three times, before getting a shot at the WBC light heavyweight belt in 2015. The Mexican has struggled to maintain consistency since, but he did take superstar Canelo Álvarez the distance, and he’s on the up after a win over Uriah Hall in his last fight.
Who’s expected to win?
)
For an opinion, we go to no less an authority than former three-weight world champion Julio César Chávez Sr. “Jake Paul is young and strong, but he's never faced a fighter like my son,” the legend insisted at a press conference. The 62-year-old dismissed Paul’s success against Tyson, saying, “I would’ve given Mike Tyson a better fight. He didn’t throw one punch.”
“Put both the Chavezs in there, I‘ll whoop Sr and Jr in the same night,” was Paul’s retort. When asked what he was expecting from the fight, Paul said: “A knockout. I’m going to do what Canelo couldn’t do, stopping this man. And you’re going to see Chávez quit, and his dad’s going to be disappointed. And all the Mexican fans are going to join Team Paul.”
Boxer turned pundit Paulie Malignaggi says, “This is a competitive fight… I thought Jake was improving for a little while, but I think for a fight or two, he’s regressed. But I still think it’s competitive. [Chávez] has lost to Anderson Silva, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he loses to Jake.”
Former UFC champ Anderson Silva, the only man to have fought both, favours Chávez according to his son Gabriel. “It all depends on which Chávez we’re going to get on the night, if he’s going to be focused. A guy like Jake might not have it to put him out… It’s going to be a good fight but my dad is definitely going for Chávez.”
If you ask the bookmakers, who usually have a good idea, they definitely agree with Paul and have made him a heavy odds-on favourite to win the fight.
What’s likely to happen next?
“This is what I came here to do: to become world champion and create one of the greatest sports stories the world has ever seen,” Paul says. “This is prize fighting, so I’m giving the fans what they want with every single fight by taking on tougher opponents.”
In his sights is WBA and WBO cruiserweight champion Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramírez, who is fighting Yuniel Dorticos on the undercard of the Paul-Chávez headliner. The champ believes Paul isn’t ready yet. “Jake Paul is a hard worker and has generated more success for himself than most professional fighters," Ramírez says. “It’s been impressive to watch, but I do believe he knows to stay away from a real fighter like myself. All talk is cheap. But Jake Paul knows he should plan a funeral if he commits to a fight against me."
Paul says his options are almost endless, saying “there’s 100 people that want to fight me… I got Canelo, Gervonta [Davis], Anthony Joshua, Badou [Jack], Zurdo, Tommy Fury, KSI, the list keeps on going. We’ll see when the negotiations come.”
If Chávez wins? At 39, he might still have a shot at a world title. But one thing’s for sure: win or lose, Jake Paul is here for a long time, not a good time. He’s not going anywhere. Here’s how the fighters measure up.
