Undoubtedly one of the best TV shows of all time, with 59 Primetime Emmy Awards, it made household names of then-unknown actors like Richard Madden, Kit Harington, Emilia Clarke, Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams. It also features some of the most notable, jaw-dropping episodes of TV ever made – no spoilers here, but brace yourself. Or to put it another way: Winter is coming…

Stream series 1-5 now in Sky Showcase on demand

The Sopranos is undeniably the show that set the blueprint for what TV would become in the 25 years that followed its debut, and its influence can be felt in every prestige drama series we’ve seen since. But it’s more than just the first TV show that truly blurred the lines between TV and film. At its heart, it’s simply a brilliant story centred around an iconic character in Tony Soprano (the late James Gandolfini). Whether it’s your first time or your 15th rewatch, it not only set the standard for TV, but it has also arguably never been surpassed. Bada bing, bada boom.

Brassic

Since 2019 Joe Gilgun and Danny Brocklehurst’s critically acclaimed, award-winning comedy drama has been among the most entertaining staples on our TVs, and we’ve loved watching Vinnie (Joe Gilgun, This Is England), Erin (Michelle Keegan, Fool Me Once), Tommo (Ryan Sampson, Mr Bigstuff) and the rest of the ne’er-do-wells get themselves in and out of seven series’ worth of chaotic adventures. It looks as if the rest of the nation agrees with us, with the show snagging the Royal Television Society Comedy Drama award in 2023 as well as countless BAFTA nominations. While the show had an epic send off in 2025, but you can catch up on all the crew’s antics on Virgin TV now.

Stream season 2 from Wednesday 7 January on Sky Witness on demand. Season 1 available now

It’s one of the best new US dramas of recent years, with Academy Award winner Kathy Bates as the iconic septuagenarian lawyer Madeline “Matty” Matlock in this gender-flipped reboot (although fun fact: in the show’s fictional universe, the original Matlock TV series aired, and that’s where Madeline’s alias comes from). Now in its second season, we’ve got another chance to see Bates at her rip-roaring best and sticking it to the smirking white-collar ne’er-do-wells ruining society as she targets the pharmaceutical industry.

Across seven gripping seasons – all available now – Nolan grows from wide-eyed newcomer to trusted officer, navigating everything from explosive cases to personal crossroads. Doc

Stream series 1-2 now in Sky Witness on demand. Also available in UHD

Brilliant but notoriously frosty physician Dr Amy Larson (Molly Parker, Deadwood) sees her life upended after a shocking accident leaves her believing it’s eight years earlier. Suddenly, she’s faced with an ex-husband she doesn’t remember divorcing, a daughter who feels like a stranger and a career she must rebuild from the ground up. That’s a lot of adulting, basically. Inspired by a true story, Doc follows Amy as she tackles retrograde amnesia, confronts the woman she used to be and tries to seize a rare second chance.

Mr Bigstuff

Stream series 1-2 now in Sky Max on demand. Also available in UHD

It's been said many times: you can’t choose your family. So, when unsuspecting couple Glen (Ryan Sampson, Brassic) and Kirsty (Harriet Webb, Big Boys) find Glen’s estranged brother Lee (Danny Dyer, Rivals) – an alpha male with nothing more than a biscuit tin of their father’s ashes to his name – on their doorstep, their mundane life is never the same again. But it’s more than just comic high jinks. The show explores modern masculinity, relationships both fraternal and romantic, and the roles we all choose for ourselves in life. It was such a hit, it even earned Dyer a BAFTA. Stream both series now.

The Gilded Age

Julian Fellowes revived our love of period dramas when he introduced us to upstairs-and-downstairs goings-on in Downton Abbey. Now in The Gilded Age, he takes that tried-and-tested formula that worked so well for the English gentry at the beginning of the 20th century and pulls us inside New York City high society at the end of the 19th century. With a member of writing royalty behind the series and a top-notch, award-winning cast, not to mention opulent interiors and flamboyant dresses, it’s a show to luxuriate in.
