On this perfect day, nothing’s standing in our way of reuniting with movie icon Elle Woods. The Legally Blonde bombshell is returning to screens in a new TV series, now portrayed by newcomer Lexi Minetree, and once again she’s struggling to fit in with her peers. In this version, though, she’s navigating high school far from sun-drenched LA or stuffy Harvard, under the grungy skies of Seattle.
So, what’s the story? Before Elle was cross-examining witnesses about ammonium thioglycolate, she was a teen who had it all – a glitzy LA lifestyle, a loving family and a giant swimming pool for all those cool parties. However, when Elle’s parents announce a move to the rainy northwestern US, she transforms from It Girl to a head-to-toe-pink misfit at her new high school. But when a scandal erupts in the hallways, it looks like Elle might be able to save the day and win over her classmates for good.
Minetree steps into the role made famous by Reese Witherspoon, and some familiar faces join the newcomer on screen. June Diane Raphael (Grace And Frankie) and Tom Everett Scott (The Summer I Turned Pretty) are Elle’s parents, while the late James Van Der Beek (Dawson’s Creek) is the school’s dean in his final screen role. Up-and-coming talents Chandler Kinney, Jacob Moskovitz, Gabrielle Policano and Zac Looker star as Elle’s fellow students and Legally Blonde fans may recognise a familiar canine companion too.
You can find Elle bending and snapping her way to screens on Wednesday 1 July in Apps > Prime Video. In the meantime, to commemorate the quarter-century since Elle Woods sashayed into our lives (feel old yet?), we’ve rounded up our 25 fan-favourite returns to TV and film worlds that you can stream now.
