Some of the biggest and best TV shows of all time will be available on Sky Showcase for Virgin TV customers.
All Virgin TV customers with Essential Entertainment on Flex, Mega TV, Mix or Maxit packages will have access to four brilliant Sky Exclusive Box Sets on Sky Showcase – including award-winning shows that have never previously aired on the service. Meaning you can watch every episode of iconic TV series like Game Of Thones, The Sopranos, Boardwalk Empire and Big Little Lies, with the complete Box Sets available on Sky Showcase.
If you have a V6 box then you can find them in On Demand > Box Sets > Sky Showcase, whereas 360 and Stream customers can find them in TV Shows > Featured > Sky Showcase.
From Westeros and Essos to Prohibition-era New Jersey, plus the show that is inarguably responsible for kick-starting the golden age of prestige TV (and is as good today as it was when it first aired 25 years ago), these are stories that will live long in your imagination.
Here’s the run-down of the Box Sets now available on Sky Showcase, at no extra cost.
Game Of Thrones
)
Season 1 airs Wednesday nights from 13 August on Sky Showcase HD (CH 109) or stream the complete S1–8 Box Set now
For the first time on Virgin TV, you can watch all 73 episodes and all eight seasons of the all-conquering Game Of Thrones, based on the celebrated fantasy book series A Song Of Fire And Ice by George RR Martin. Like all the Sky Exclusive Box Sets on Sky Showcase dropping this month, Game Of Thrones is undoubtedly one of the best TV shows of all time, making household names of then unknown actors like Richard Madden, Kit Harington, Emilia Clarke, Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams. It also features some of the most notable, jaw-dropping episodes of TV ever made – no spoilers here, but brace yourself.
The critically acclaimed series received 59 Primetime Emmy Awards, the most by a drama series. It’s all here, ready to watch now. Or to put it another way: Winter is coming…
The Sopranos
)
Season 1 airs Sunday nights from 17 August on Sky Showcase HD (CH 109) or stream the complete S1–6 Box Set now
The Sopranos is many things. It’s undeniably the show that set the blueprint for what TV would become in the 25 years that followed its debut, and its influence can be felt in every prestige drama series we’ve seen since. But it’s more than just a playbook of how cinematic storytelling with complex characters could blur the line between TV and film. Like literature that has persevered for centuries, The Sopranos is – at its heart – simply a brilliant story centred around an iconic character in Tony Soprano (the late James Gandolfini) who remains as compelling today as he did in 1999.
Whether it’s your first time or your 15th rewatch, it not only set the standard for TV, but it has also arguably never been surpassed. Bada bing, bada boom.
Boardwalk Empire
)
Season 1 airs Friday nights from 22 August on Sky Showcase HD (CH 109) or stream the complete S1–4 Box Set now
It’s testament to the strength of these four Box Sets that you won’t know which one to binge first. But the case for Boardwalk Empire is very strong. If The Sopranos set the standard for cinematic storytelling, Terence Winter’s period crime drama stepped it up a notch with cinema legend Martin Scorsese directing the pilot episode, and then by casting Steve Buscemi – whose credits included acclaimed roles in Fargo, The Big Lebowski and Reservoir Dogs – in the lead role.
With lavish sets and costumes, era-accurate production and a story dripping with tension and suspense, it’s a show that probably doesn’t get enough flowers. Scorsese was lured to direct the pilot – his first foray into TV since 1986 – and it's undoubtedly one of the best period dramas ever made.
Big Little Lies
)
Season 1 airs Wednesday nights from 17 September on Sky Showcase HD (CH 109) or stream the complete S1–2 Box Set now
Big Little Lies gave us compelling and suspenseful drama with complex characters and a gorgeous visual style. But what elevates a show like this one to greatness is that it had something meaningful to say about our world, delving into the complexities of female friendships, the challenges of motherhood and the aftermath of trauma, all through a uniquely female lens that had seldom been explored in such detail on TV before. And, frankly, since.
Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Shailene Woodley, Laura Dern and Meryl Streep gave us an ensemble cast for the ages and knocked it out of the park with their performances. A psychological dark comedy drama on the face of it, Big Little Lies was so much more.
