Mildred Hayes (Frances McDormand) comes to know this battle all too well in Martin McDonagh’s Oscar-winning film, which follows Mildred’s fight for justice against a small-town police department after they failed to catch the culprit who murdered her daughter. There’s no love like a mother’s love, and Julia Roberts’s moving performance as a fierce and protective parent was acclaimed by the critics and the public alike. When 10-year-old boy Auggie (Jacob Tremblay), who was born with a rare facial deformity called mandibulofacial dysostosis, enrols in school for the first time, he embarks on a journey of self-discovery while teaching his peers that you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover.

Motherhood isn’t all about homemade cards and the school run. At its core it’s about sacrifice, which is the premise for this French-language drama that won the Best Screenplay prize at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. Shot in a documentary style, the film follows the lives of five young mothers living in a shelter, where they’re taught how to care for their babies or prepare their for adoption in the most challenging of circumstances.
