True Blood

Stream the complete seasons 1-7 Box Set from Thursday 8 January
Alan Ball, Academy Award, Emmy and Golden Globe winning writer and director, followed up his acclaimed series Six Feet Under with True Blood, his second show for HBO that – at the time – became the premium cable network’s most watched show since The Sopranos. Starring Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer as a waitress and vampire who fall in love, it’s set against the invention of a synthetic blood product (“Tru Blood”) that allowed vampires to finally reveal themselves to the world.
But it’s more than just a love story, chronicling the vampires’ struggle for equal rights and assimilation while anti-vampire organisations begin to gain power. It also features so many parallels to contemporary issues like drug addiction, the meaning of faith, violence against minorities and the rising influence (and distortion) of the media. Catch all seven seasons now.
Band Of Brothers
)
Stream the complete Box Set from Thursday 8 January
If you asked 100 people to name the greatest TV show of all time, you’d certainly get a lot of different answers – but we’d also wager a lot of those surveyed would call out Band Of Brothers, the landmark miniseries from executive producers Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, without a second’s hesitation. At the time, it was the most expensive TV series ever produced and perhaps the first show that truly brought the cinematic experience to the small screen in a 12-hour story that could only work on TV.
It follows Easy Company of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment from the gruelling training grounds of Camp Toccoa through D-Day, Operation Market Garden and the brutal winter siege of Bastogne. Featuring breakout performances from Damian Lewis, Ron Livingston and a cast of future stars, it blends visceral combat with intimate character drama to show the cost of war on the men who carried it. Prestige TV at its most powerful and its most human.
The Pacific
)
Stream the complete Box Set from Thursday 8 January
Where Band Of Brothers charted the path across Europe, The Pacific turns its gaze to a very different kind of war – one fought in suffocating heat, dense jungles and on unforgiving stretches of sand. Spielberg and Hanks returned as executive producers, but the tone here was more fevered and more intimate, following three Marines whose stories capture the chaos and cost of the Pacific campaign: Robert Leckie, Eugene Sledge and Medal of Honour recipient John Basilone, played with remarkable depth by James Badge Dale, Joseph Mazzello and Jon Seda.
From the desperate early days on Guadalcanal to the harrowing battles of Peleliu and Okinawa, the series trades sweeping movements for the raw, ground-level experience of men pushed to their physical and emotional limits. With astonishing craftsmanship and a relentless honesty, The Pacific stands as a defining work of prestige television. A companion to Band Of Brothers, sure, but also a singular portrait of courage, survival and the scars left behind. Don’t miss it on Virgin TV now.
