Don't let quarrels spoil Christmas
Top tips on how to avoid arguments:
- Don’t allow grievances to fester until they become explosive. Air your problem in a managed fashion, rather than storing up anger until it spills over into a row.
- Listen carefully to what is being said and show that you understand your loved ones point, even if you don't agree with it.
- Choose your words carefully. Rather than saying "you always..." try, "you sometimes..."
- Keep the volume down. Don’t shout, speak. Don't argue, discuss.
- Never tackle controversial matters over the phone or email. Body language and facial expressions are vital to good communication.
- Learn to break conversational patterns that always lead to an old argument rearing its ugly head. Take evasive action and change the subject as smoothly as you can.
