Sport to watch this week

Pick of the week

Football: Premier League – Man City v Liverpool
Sunday 9 November, 4pm, Sky Sports Premier League/HD (CH 512/502)

The signs were there. Liverpool may have started their Premier League title defence with five victories, but four of those required winning goals in the 83rd minute or later. Arne Slot’s new-look team were not convincing, and sure enough, the wheels came off after a defeat at Crystal Palace. The five consecutive league wins were followed by four straight defeats.

While Slot works on getting his summer signings to click, it’s not clear exactly where Pep Guardiola’s Man City side are in their evolution. Last season they looked a shadow of the team that won four titles in a row; this term they’ve improved since a couple of dismal early defeats, with last week’s clinical dismantling of Bournemouth particularly impressive. Their biggest problem at the moment is producing goals from any source that isn’t Erling Haaland, although when you score as many as he does, that’s hardly an issue.

Hosts City have to be favourites for this match – but don’t forget that Slot masterminded two wins over them twice last season, and despite their integration issues, the Reds have plenty of quality. This would be a perfect time for Florian Wirtz to prove he’s worth his nine-figure transfer fee and make the kind of impact that turns a season around. It’s going to be fascinating.

Movies to watch this week

Pick of the week

1917
Sunday 9 November, 10.50pm, BBC Two HD (CH 102) + Tuesday 11 November, 10pm, BBC Four HD (CH 108/107)

At the height of the First World War, two soldiers are tasked with an arduous, seemingly impossible mission: to swiftly cross through enemy territory, alert a division to an enemy ambush and save hundreds of men from slaughter. This is the nail-biting premise of director Sam Mendes’ Oscar-winning movie, which depicts the horror and scale of the war by filming the pair, played by Dean-Charles Chapman (The King) and George MacKay (Captain Fantastic), in a single take as they travel through one beautiful, bleak or violent landscape after another. Taut and audaciously conceived, the film is essential – and almost unbearably suspenseful – viewing.
