TV to watch this week

Wednesday 11 March

Pick of the day: A Woman Of Substance
9pm, Channel 4 HD (CH 104)

Back in 1984, Channel 4’s first screen adaptation of Barbara Taylor Bradford’s bestselling novel set a record for the network’s highest ever audience for a single show. Now, the rags-to-riches revenge romp has been reimagined with Vera star Brenda Blethyn. Impoverished maid Emma Harte (played by both Blethyn and House Of Guinness’s Jessica Reynolds) embarks on a dizzying journey to become the world’s richest woman. Emmett J Scanlan (How To Get To Heaven From Belfast), Lenny Rush (Am I Being Unreasonable?) and Jo Joyner (The Wives) also star.

On 13 March 1996, a 43-year-old gunman murdered 16 children and one teacher at Dunblane Primary School in Scotland, leading to a nationwide campaign in which stricter gun legislation was brought into the UK. To mark the 30th anniversary of the Dunblane massacre, parents, politicians and campaigners share the stories of their courageous mission to change the law and ban handguns in the wake of an unthinkable tragedy. Moving viewing.

Pick of the day: The Claudia Winkleman Chat Show
10.40pm, BBC One HD (CH 101)

Claudia Winkleman might have picked the traditional day of bad luck to make her TV chat show debut, but we’re sure it won’t give The Traitors host the willies – let alone the big entertainment hitters who’ll be joining her. Hollywood heavyweight Jeff Goldblum, TV stalwart Jennifer Saunders, West End star Vanessa Williams and comedian Tom Allen chinwag with the owner of telly’s best fringe about their upcoming projects, plus (hopefully) star-studded anecdotes and loose-lipped revelations.

But in these new episodes, two new stars and a fan favourite are joining the ranks to stir things up again. Introducing Too Hot To Handle winner Elys Hutchinson and current MIC star Jules Pollard’s older brother Philip, while Inga Valentiner’s return to the show is bound to ruffle some feathers in SW3.

Pick of the day: The Marlow Murder Club
8pm, U&Drama HD (CH 116)

Return to the idyllic town of Marlow as super-sleuths Suzie Harris (Jo Martin), Judith Potts (Samantha Bond) and Becks Starling (Cara Horgan) take on their biggest cases yet, now as a respected part of DCI Tanika Malik’s (Natalie Dew) crime-solving team. Seemingly inexplicable murders in the third series of the beloved cosy crime drama include the sudden death of the town’s mayor and the public demise of a celebrity chef, while Becks is shocked to find herself among the suspects of foul play at a university reunion. Sport to watch this week

Pick of the week

Rugby Union: Men’s Six Nations – Ireland v Scotland
Saturday 14 March, 1pm, ITV1 HD (CH 103)

Scotland won the final Five Nations championship in 1999, but since expansion they’ve never claimed the Men’s Six Nations trophy. Could that be about to change? After their opening defeat to Italy, it looked unlikely, but Gregor Townsend’s team followed that with impressive victories over Wales, England and especially France, running in seven tries against the French at Murrayfield in an exuberant display of attacking rugby.

They’re level on points with France in the table but behind on points difference, so it’s not entirely in Scotland’s hands. And they could hardly have a tougher match in the final round. Ireland’s chances of claiming the title are still alive, and Scotland haven’t beaten Ireland since 2017 – and they haven’t won in Dublin in 16 years.

There are numerous variables, factors and machinations, and much depends on the result of the evening game in Paris – France v England, 7.20pm, ITV1 HD (CH 103) – but whatever happens, it should all add up to a cracking day of top-class rugby. Scotland fans, please, don’t forget to breathe.

Movies to watch this week

Pick of the week

Pick of the week: Cabaret
Saturday 14 March, 10.55pm, BBC Two HD (CH 102)

With both Cabaret the stage musical and Liza Minnelli celebrating milestone birthdays this year, get swept up in the magic of the Kit Kat Klub again with Bob Fosse’s critically acclaimed film set in 1930s Berlin. Minnelli gives a magnificent performance as the starry-eyed cabaret performer Sally Bowles who’s chasing dreams of fame when she meets reserved academic writer Brian Roberts (Michael York), and together they embark on a hedonistic romance against a backdrop of growing Nazism in German society. Still holding the record for the most Oscar wins for a film that didn’t win Best Picture (The Godfather snagged the top prize), Fosse’s groundbreaking movie adaptation is a timeless tale of love and decadence that remains as relevant today as ever.
