Pick of the week
Football: EFL Championship – Coventry City v Watford
Saturday 25 October, 12.25pm, Sky Sports+/HD (CH 518/508)
Despite Coventry’s poor start to last season, fans were shocked by the dismissal of Mark Robins, the long-serving manager who’d overseen two promotions, an EFL Trophy win and a Championship play-off final defeat. However, Frank Lampard has proved a popular replacement: in 2024/25 he took City from 17th into the play-offs, and his team have started 2025/26 with gusto, unbeaten in 11 games and comfortably the top scorers in all four divisions.
Watford fans, meanwhile, have long since stopped trying to understand the club owners’ methodology when it comes to coaches. We think – we think – that in the past 10 years they’ve had 14 full-time managers, and the current one is on his second spell. In fact, Javi Gracia is the longest-lasting and among the most successful of those bosses, having taken charge of 66 games and led Watford to the 2019 FA Cup final. Could his reappointment signal a new era of stability at Vicarage Road?
Perhaps. The second match of Gracia’s return takes the Hornets to the CBS Arena to face a Coventry side whose forwards – including USA international Haji Wright and Ghana’s Brandon Thomas-Asante – are in red-hot form. We’re not suggesting Gracia’s reign will be cut super-short if they lose. But stranger things have happened… Either way, the Sky Blues are among the country’s most exciting teams right now, so tune in to Sky Sports for what’s bound to be an entertaining match.
