Sport to watch this week

Pick of the week

Football: England v France
Saturday 5 July. 7pm, ITV1 HD (CH 103)

If you’ve been following the build-up to UEFA Women‘s Euro 2025, what you’ve probably heard is that England have been ROCKED by retirements and withdrawals ahead of the tournament. But you wouldn’t know it from looking at coach Sarina Wiegman, who’s as calm and in control as ever. As well she might be, because she has a talented squad at her disposal – including Lauren Hemp, Georgia Stanway, Lauren James and Alex Greenwood, all of whom were injury worries just a few weeks ago – with the experience, strength and firepower to defend the title they won so memorably in 2022.

It’s not going to be easy, though. Their first opponents are France, who are coming off a 100% record in their recent Nations League campaign, making them the top seeds in Group D. They’re notorious for never quite managing to succeed in tournaments despite their quality, but they‘re always dangerous.

The Lionesses will have to be at their best to beat them – which they were when they won 2-1 in St-Étienne in the qualifying campaign. It’s an intriguing match-up and one that could decide who wins the group. You can see Wales’s first match in the same group against the Netherlands earlier on Saturday at 4.15pm on BBC One HD (CH 101).
