Sport to watch this week

Pick of the week

Football: UEFA Champions League Semi-final 1st Leg – Paris Saint-Germain v Bayern Munich
Tuesday 28 April, 6.30pm, Apps > Prime Video

Anyone who loves to watch attacking football will be positively salivating at the prospect of this semi-final. After an indifferent league phase, Paris Saint-Germain upped their game in the knockouts to see off Monaco, Chelsea and Liverpool with some scintillating play. But it’s Bayern who have really caught the eye. After demolishing Atalanta 10-2 on aggregate, they won 2-1 at the home of the mighty Real Madrid. While Real gave them an early scare in the second leg in Munich, Bayern’s relentlessly positive football brought two late goals that took them through.

The phenomenal Bayern front three of ex-Premier League stars – Luis Díaz, Michael Olise and Harry Kane – are closing in on a combined 100 goals this season, and with their pace, trickery, vision and lethal finishing, they would give any defence nightmares. But PSG have their own superstar forward line and this time last year, Ousmane Dembélé, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Désiré Doué and co led the club to the Champions League trophy.

One big advantage for Bayern is that they’ve wrapped up the Bundesliga title so they can focus all their attention on this competition, while PSG are still fending off a domestic challenge from Lens (and their Ligue 1 form has been uncertain, with recent home defeats to Monaco and Lyon). On the other hand, we’d expect the smart, level-headed Parisian midfield and defence led by Vitinha and Marquinhos to offer a tougher test than the volatile Real. If both sides’ sensational forwards do their thing, it’s going to be a night to remember at the Parc des Princes – with at least another 90 minutes to come the following week.
