Sport to watch this week

Pick of the week

Football: Scottish Premiership – Rangers v Celtic

Sunday 31 August, 11am, Sky Sports Football/HD (CH 513/503)

There’s always a lot riding on an Old Firm match given the fierce rivalry between the two Glasgow footballing behemoths, but it’s unusual for one to feel so crucial this early in the season. Rangers have made their worst start to a league campaign since 1989 with three 1-1 draws and sit in the bottom half of the table, already six points behind Celtic. If they were to lose this game – at home, no less – that gap would turn into a veritable chasm, putting manager Russell Martin under serious pressure even though he was only appointed in the summer.

As for Celtic, the defending champions have begun the Premiership season with three straightforward victories (zero goals conceded), but they’ve missed out on the glamour and riches of the UEFA Champions League thanks to a shock defeat to Kairat of Kazakhstan in qualifying. A win at Ibrox would be just the tonic, although it wouldn’t help with Celtic’s other perennial problem, namely Brendan Rodgers being constantly linked to coaching jobs in the Premier League.

On top of that, this derby takes place the day before the transfer window closes – sorry, slams shut – so will completing those final, essential bits of business be a distraction? And can any new signings be the difference-makers in this momentous match? With so much intrigue, kick-off can’t come soon enough.

Movies to watch this week

Pick of the week

Boston Strangler

Saturday 30 August, 10pm, Channel 4 HD (CH 104)

We can’t wait to watch Keira Knightley shine in the upcoming thriller The Woman In Cabin 10 this autumn. In the meantime, we can get our starry fix with true crime flick Boston Strangler. Inspired by real events, Knightley plays American reporter Loretta McLaughlin, who – despite backlash from her workplace and local authorities – courageously reported on the Boston Strangler, a serial killer who murdered 13 women in the early 1960s. Carrie Coon, Alessandro Nivola and Chris Cooper also star in this chilling tale that will have you hiding behind a cushion.
