Pick of the week: Rugby League – St Helens v Salford Red Devils
Saturday 14 February, 5.15pm, BBC Two HD (CH 102) + 5.30pm, Sky Sports+
Every match of the new Super League season, which begins this week, will be live on Sky Sports and you can also see live action on the BBC, starting with Saturday’s intriguing clash between St Helens and Salford at the Totally Wicked Stadium. The Saints seem to be suffering a hangover after their four titles in a row up to 2022, only just securing a top-six place last year, while the unfancied Red Devils upset the odds to finish fourth. Neither made it past the first round of the play-offs and they’ll be looking to improve on that in 2025.
The good news for Salford fans is that they fended off interest in their star players like halfback Marc Sneyd and winger Nene MacDonald, as well as making a few shrewd signings like Huddersfield’s Esan Marsters, leaving them well placed to challenge again. St Helens have recruited Australian stars Kyle Feldt and Tristan Sailor to boost their squad, but they’re now without long-time idol Tommy Makinson, who’s left for Catalans Dragons. Tune in to see which side is best prepared for the tests to come this season.
