Sport to watch this week

Pick of the week

Football: FIFA Women’s World Cup Qualifying Group A3 – Ukraine v England
Tuesday 3 March, 4.30pm, ITV4 HD (CH 118)

Lionesses coach Sarina Wiegman has achieved phenomenal success in the international game, including a hat-trick of European Championship triumphs with the Netherlands and England. But considering the motivational skills and laser focus she displays constantly, it’s likely she doesn’t think a pair of World Cup runners-up medals constitutes success. Wiegman has unfinished business with this competition after losing finals in 2019 and 2023, and this week the road to potential redemption begins as the qualifying campaign kicks off.

The Mardan Sports Complex in Antalya, Türkiye, will be unfamiliar surroundings for both sides, and despite the difficulties that Ukraine face, England must resist any sense that this will be a routine victory. Their opponents are used to adapting and are unbeaten in “home” matches for more than two years. Ukraine may not have qualified for a senior tournament since Euro 2009 but they’re an up-and-coming team with a solid mix of youth and experience. Captain Olga Ovdiychuk plays her club football in Türkiye with Fomget.

England are not at their strongest, with several of their key players struggling for form and fitness – Leah Williamson and Lauren James, for example, have only just returned from significant lay-offs. A potential match-winner is Lauren Hemp, who’s been inspirational in Man City’s impressive season, while Lucy Bronze will no doubt be demonstrating her usual willingness to run through brick walls for the cause. It’s a tricky start, but there are trickier tests ahead with old rivals Spain in the same group, so a win is essential for England.
