There’s a huge month of live action ahead on Sky Sports, including major golf tournaments in the Open Championship and Evian Championship, while the British and Irish Lions face Australia in three Tests. You can also enjoy tons of cricket including England games and the start of The Hundred, as well as two Grands Prix, the Darts World Matchplay and more.
And it might feel as though the football season only ended last week, but the new season starts here, with EFL and Scottish Premiership matches from the start of August. Read on for your comprehensive guide to the best of the sporting action in the coming month.
Virgin TV 360 and Stream viewers can make the most of Sky Sports+ on their box with the red button or watch on the Sky Sports app. If you watch on a TiVo® or V6 box (powered by TiVo®), you can watch on the app or upgrade your package. Find out all you need to know here.

Golf
)
Two more majors in women’s and men’s golf this month, starting with the Evian Championship, the only women’s major played outside the US. Ayaka Furue of Japan pipped Australia’s Stephanie Kyriacou to the trophy by one stroke last year, and she’ll be well aware that this is a difficult title to defend – no one’s done so since Laura Davies all the way back in 1996. Could world number one Nelly Korda add this major to her collection? Or will another victor emerge? Follow the action from Évian-Les-Bains on Sky Sports.
A week later, Royal Portrush is the venue for the 153rd Open Championship, with comprehensive live coverage on Sky Sports as always. Since it’s taking place in Northern Ireland, you can expect lots of attention to be on Rory McIlroy as both a local hero and a newly crowned career grand slam winner. However, last time the Open was staged here in 2019, he missed the cut. Rory will no doubt be keen to make up for that in 2025.
Other favourites include recent major winners Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele, but as always in the Open, it very much depends on the weather and which players successfully get to grips with the links conditions. Plenty of outsiders have claimed the Claret Jug, including Brian Harman just two years ago. Look out for an unexpected front-runner emerging from the pack. The golfing action continues all month long on Sky Sports.

Rugby Union: British + Irish Lions
The Lions tour began with some thumping victories over Australian club sides, but coach Andy Farrell wasn’t satisfied, insisting that his team needed to keep things tighter from the start of matches. The call-up of Farrell’s son Owen to replace injury victim Elliot Daly was seen as an attempt to provide a more competitive edge. If the players reach the levels that the coach is demanding, we could be about to witness an epic series akin to the last Australian tour in 2013, which went to a deciding Test match that the Lions won 41-16 – a record score for the team.
The Wales contingent were the heroes back then, while this time the Lions are dependent mostly on Irish and English players, although Scotland prop Pierre Schoemann is also proving his worth. Who will emerge as the hero in 2025? You can see all three Tests live on Sky Sports this month, starting in Brisbane and continuing in Melbourne and Sydney, as well as the other tour matches.

The Lions aren’t the only rugby show in town this summer, with lots more internationals scheduled in the southern hemisphere and mouthwatering ones they are too. England are in Argentina for Test matches against the Pumas, who will no doubt fancy their chances of victory against a team missing numerous Lions players. The All Blacks host France, two teams who – fun fact – have played each other in the Rugby World Cup more times than any other pairs of opponents, including that classic final in Auckland in 2011. Sky Sports also has live action from South Africa, where the Springboks face Italy and Georgia.

Cricket: Men’s Tests
)
Ben Stokes isn’t like other captains. He’s different, edgy, a maverick. That’s why he keeps thumbing his nose at convention by putting the opposition in to bat when he wins the toss. Of course, it’s terrific when it pays off, such as in the thrilling, big-scoring first Test at Headingley where England broke records by successfully chasing down 372 in the fourth innings. And even when it doesn’t, this England team are capable of producing fantastic periods of play, like Jamie Smith’s brilliant counter-attacking century at Edgbaston (although it ended in defeat).
The upshot is that the series could still easily go either way as we approach the third Test at Lord’s – so will England consider changing their approach? It seems unlikely but whatever happens, it’s likely to be highly entertaining. This is Test cricket at the absolute top level and Sky Sports has every ball live.

Cricket: Women’s Internationals
After convincing T20 and ODI series wins over West Indies, England got a rude awakening when they faced India. The first T20 was a frankly crushing 97-run defeat, with Smriti Mandhana helping herself to 112 off 62 balls in a total 210, before the English batting line-up was summarily dismissed for 113 in less than 15 overs. The second was a little better for England but still a defeat, and the news got worse as captain Nat Sciver-Brunt was ruled out before the third T20 with injury – although England did win the game in her absence to make it 2-1.
So there’s still life in the T20 series, and England will also target a series win in the ODIs, which start on 16 July. But India have shown their intent and their prowess, and they look set to supplant their opponents as the world’s second-ranked team. Can England stop them? Find out on Sky Sports.

Cricket: T20 Blast
The T20 Blast group stage runs until 18 July and Sky Sports is showing a number of live matches including Durham’s home double-header on 15 July. The Durham women’s team take on Surrey, who will be looking to continue their dominance at the top of the table, while the men have a much better chance of making the finals and face Leicestershire.
The top three in the women’s League One will make it to finals day at the Oval on 27 July, where the second- and third-placed teams will play off to face the league leaders. Surrey, Birmingham Bears and The Blaze (Nottinghamshire) are the favourites, but there’s still a way to go. One thing we can say with confidence is that Gloucestershire won’t defend their men’s title after losing their first five matches.

Cricket: The Hundred
Colourful and fast-paced, The Hundred is back for another year, and it’s a big opening day featuring both the men’s and women’s champions in a double-header at Lord’s. London Spirit were the women’s winners in 2024, with Georgia Redmayne producing decisive runs in the knockout stages as they overcame the Oval Invincibles and then table-toppers Welsh Fire. In the men’s competition it was the Invincibles who triumphed, topping the table and then holding off Southern Brave to win the final by 17 runs, pace bowler Saqib Mahmood nabbing three wickets in his 20 balls.
London Spirit won’t be led by Heather Knight this year, after the former England skipper was ruled out of the whole summer with a hamstring injury. Could this stymie their title defence? We’ll get a clue on 5 August, after which there are daily matches until 28 August, with the finals on the Sunday 31 August.

Formula One’s stock has never been higher, with Brad Pitt’s F1 movie cleaning up at the box office this summer, and the wildly popular Netflix series Drive To Survive bringing in new fans all the time. But never forget it’s all about racing, and two classic circuits feature in the schedule this month.
Spa-Francorchamps, the century-old track that’s been hosting the Belgian Grand Prix since long before the F1 World Championship began, is a perennial favourite with fans and drivers alike thanks to its wicked corners that allow a fantastic showcase of driving skill. While the Hungaroring is too twisty for many manoeuvres, it’s been the scene of some memorable races in its 40 years, including Nigel Mansell winning from 12th on the grid and the duels between Ayrton Senna and Nelson Piquet.
This season it’s McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris who are battling it out for the title, Norris having cut Piastri’s lead with a win in the rain at Silverstone. Can one of them forge ahead with commanding performances this month, or will another driver emerge from the chasing pack? Find out on Sky Sports.

Football: Scottish Premiership
Sky Sports has four live games from the opening round of Premiership fixtures – the point of the season at which, in theory, anyone can win the title and fans around the country are full of optimism. New Rangers boss Russell Martin takes his team to Motherwell with, it’s fair to say, quite a lot to do to win over supporters who weren’t convinced by his last job at Southampton (or his brief spell as a Rangers player in 2018).
But if Martin can make a real go of competing with Celtic this year, along with a decent European run, they’ll be singing his name in no time. The champions kick off at home to St Mirren and you can also see newly promoted Falkirk against Dundee United, as well as Hearts at home to Aberdeen.

Achieving three consecutive promotions is an astounding feat. Four would be barely believable. But that’s the dream for Wrexham, who were playing National League football in 2022/23 and this season will be competing in the Championship. The caveat, of course, is that the funding provided by actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney made them stand out in the divisions below, but now they’re up against bigger, richer clubs; the Championship is even more difficult to get out of than the leagues Wrexham have left behind.
But don’t rule out the momentum factor, which could be huge – as seen in the Welcome To Wrexham documentary, which showcased a real uplift for both the club and the town. Also promoted are Birmingham City, who have their own deep-pocketed backers, as well as an Under-21s Euros winner in striker Jay Stansfield. It could be a nervy time for some of the more established Championship clubs, not to mention the three relegated from the Premier League, who were all varying shades of dismal last term and have lost some of their best players.
Relegated teams face promoted teams in the first round of fixtures, with Birmingham at home to Ipswich and Wrexham visiting Southampton. All the games of the opening weekend are live on Sky Sports.

Friday Night Football on 1 August brings us relegated Luton Town, who suffered their second successive demotion in May, versus League Two play-off winners AFC Wimbledon. Promoted Barnet face Fleetwood Town at home, while National League play-off winners Oldham travel to Milton Keynes. Gillingham, who could do with their American investment starting to pay off soon, will aim for a strong start away at Accrington, who only just hung on to their league status last season.
Other promotion contenders include Walsall, who spent much of 2024/25 top of the league but missed out: they start at home to Swindon, who improved after a poor start and will look to push onwards and upwards. In this unpredictable division, it’s going to be another gripping season.

Football: EFL Cup
We don’t know about you, but every year we have to remind ourselves how the early rounds of the EFL Cup – aka Carabao Cup – work. And this year there’s an added complication. Because so many Premier League clubs have qualified for Europe, and therefore won’t be entering the EFL Cup till the third round, there’s an extra preliminary round featuring the two clubs promoted from the National League (Barnet and Oldham) and the 21st- and 22nd-placed clubs in League Two (Accrington and Newport). Then the first and second rounds are regionalised into northern and southern sections; the Premier League teams not playing in Europe join in round two.
Got all that? Phew. What is easy to understand is that every EFL Cup match is live on Sky Sports thanks to the Sky Sports+ service. In 2024/25 it provided one of the moments of the season as Newcastle broke their long trophy drought at Wembley. Could we see something similar this year?

Hull KR retired their number six shirt in 2016 in honour of club legend Roger Millward, but they brought it back this year for Mikey Lewis, who’s honouring Millward in his own style. The reigning Man of Steel has been flying for Rovers as they’ve powered back to the top level of English rugby league, scoring tries aplenty and leading his team to their first trophy for 40 years in the Challenge Cup final. They’re still top of the Super League as the campaign heads towards its final few weeks, and you can see if the Robins can stay there as they face Leigh, Catalans and Castleford live on Sky Sports this month – part of Sky Sports’ comprehensive coverage, with all matches shown via Sky Sports+.

Manly Warringah Sea Eagles have a fierce rivalry with Melbourne Storm, dating back to the consecutive Grand Finals in 2007 and 2008 in which they faced each other. Each team won one, but the Storm were later stripped of their premiership because of salary cap breaches, leaving Manly and their fans smarting at what could – or should – have been. The two meet at Melbourne’s AAMI Park on 19 July, live on Sky Sports, with the Sea Eagles challenging for a finals place but needing wins to stay in contention: getting one against the Storm would be particularly satisfying. This month you can also see Manly face the Bulldogs, who have been top of the ladder for much of the season, as well as lots more live men’s NRL matches.

Rugby League: NRL Women
)
The women’s NRL was inaugurated in 2018 and has gone from strength to strength, expanding from four teams to 12 – the Bulldogs join and the Warriors rejoin for 2025 – and drawing an impressive crowd of over 40,000 for the most recent Grand Final, in which Sydney Roosters defeated Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks 32-28 in an exciting, high-quality contest. July heralds the start of the 2025 season, with a clutch of players enticed from rugby union to augment the league while Canadian forward Megan Pakulis, who won the 2024 English Women’s Super League with York Valkyrie, has signed for Gold Coast Titans. Darts: World Matchplay
)
One leg of darts’ Triple Crown, along with the World Championship and Premier League, the men’s World Matchplay comes with a chunky £200,000 winner’s prize. That wealth has been shared around recently, with eight different champions in the tournament’s last eight iterations. It’s tempting to assume 2025 will bring a ninth, with Luke Littler making headlines everywhere he goes these days. But he’s not been at his very best recently: he’s without a title since early March, he failed to defend his Premier League crown and, most shockingly, he and Luke Humphries crashed out of the World Cup to Germany in their first match.
Littler’s normally a player for the big occasion, of course, but as you’d expect, there’s stiff opposition between him and the World Matchplay trophy – not least Humphries, the holder, along with Order of Merit high-flyers Stephen Bunting, Jonny Clayton and Nathan Aspinall. It’s going to be a fascinating competition at Blackpool’s Winter Gardens, live on Sky Sports.
Ahead of the final on 17 July, you can see the eight qualifiers face off in the Women’s World Matchplay, including former champ Fallon Sherrock and holder Beau Greaves. England’s Gemma Hayter and Finland’s Kirsi Viinikainen have made the finals for the first time.

Tennis
The world’s top players converge on London in June for Wimbledon – and then scatter all over the world following its conclusion in July. From the clay courts of Gstaad and Hamburg to the hard surfaces in Los Cabos and Prague, there’s action from across Europe and North America this month. The most prestigious tournament coming up is in Washington DC, played on the hard courts of the William HG FitzGerald Tennis Center. Motorsport: IndyCar
The “three-peat” (aka hat-trick) is definitely on. Spain’s two-time champ Álex Palou is still the man to beat in this year’s IndyCar series, after he got back to winning ways at the Grand Prix of Road America in Wisconsin. (There was a rare bit of British IndyCar success in that race when Louis Foster qualified on pole, going on to finish 11th). Next up, it’s the season’s only double-header, held at Iowa Speedway in Newton over an all-action weekend. Kyle Kirkwood is Palou’s closest rival but with just four races left after Toronto, that third championship is Palou’s to lose. Can anyone stop him?
