Cricket: The Ashes

Watch The Ashes on TNT Sports this month.

Yeah… it’s not been great, has it? The least we expect for staying up all night/getting up ridiculously early to watch England is a solid performance and a chance of a win going into the fourth or fifth day. But, aside from the England bowling attack in the first Test and a Joe Root century in Brisbane, all the best cricket has come from the Australians, leading to much Aussie crowing. (Never takes much to prompt that, does it?) The good news is it might be 2-0 but there are still three Tests left, so it can be turned around. It’s never over till it’s over.

To be fair, the Ashes are such a fantastic sporting occasion – especially in the incredible Australian stadiums – that even when England are taking a beating, it’s worth watching just to admire the surroundings and soak up the atmosphere. And we suppose we can appreciate some of the excellent cricket played by Australians too…

Cricket: Internationals

West Indies came surprisingly close to a record run chase of 531 in Christchurch, thanks largely to a double century from Justin Greaves, but ran out of time and had to settle for a draw. There were no such heroics in Wellington, where New Zealand reached the modest fourth-innings target of 56 with ease. So West Indies will need to dig deep if they’re going to rescue the three-match series in Tauranga.

Elsewhere, India gained a measure of revenge for South Africa’s Test series victory by beating them 2-1 in the ODI series, so whichever side wins the T20s will get the bragging rights. In the new year, India welcome New Zealand for a white-ball tour – keep up with all the action on TNT Sports this month.

Football: Premier League

Watch Premier League football on TNT Sports this month.

Newcastle and Chelsea have been the Premier League’s two most enigmatic teams this season. Capable of brilliance, sure, like Chelsea’s Champions League demolition of Barcelona or Newcastle’s creditable, hard-fought home win over Man City, but with some dire moments as well. Still, at the time of writing, they’re separated by seven places but just three points, such is the tight nature of the league this year. So their clash at St James’ Park could have a big impact on each club’s position heading into the Christmas period.

Midfield could be the key battleground, with both sides renowned for their high-class trios: Reece James, Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez, and Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali and Joelinton. Who (if fit and selected) will come out on top? Find out on TNT Sports, which also brings you Nottingham Forest’s two tough home games against Man City and Arsenal over the festive season, as well as Leeds v Man Utd.

Football: UEFA Champions League

The penultimate matchday in the league stage of the 2025/26 Champions League is imminent, and all the English clubs are in pretty good shape. Despite some, ah, inconsistent form in the Premier League, Liverpool, Newcastle and Spurs have gathered enough points to put themselves firmly in the play-off spots and a few more will ensure they’re seeded. Man City got everyone’s attention with their ruthlessly efficient victory over Real Madrid at the Bernabeu, which put them in the top four – but there’s no doubt that Arsenal have been the continent’s most impressive performers so far, with six wins out of six.

There are enough top-class contenders behind the Gunners that they haven’t quite guaranteed their spot in the round of 16 yet, but it’s surely just a matter of time. Don’t miss the Champions League action on TNT Sports in January.

Football: UEFA Conference League

Crystal Palace were installed as favourites to win the Conference League at the start of the campaign – as you’d expect for participants from the ultra-wealthy Premier League, up against opponents from Malta, Armenia, Gibraltar and the like – but it’s not been smooth sailing for Oliver Glasner’s side, who lost at home to Larnaca of Cyprus and came unstuck again against Liam Rosenior’s Strasbourg, who top the table and were the first team to qualify for the next stage. Palace’s final match in this competition in 2025 is at home to Finnish club KuPs, whose only win so far was at home to Slovan Bratislava.

Aberdeen and the League of Ireland’s Shamrock Rovers have both had a chastening time and are playing for pride in their remaining matches: the Dons visit Prague, while the Hoops are at home to Maltese side Hamrum Spartans, who are also out.

Football: FA Cup Round 3

Watch the FA Cup Round 3 on TNT Sports this month.

National League North side Macclesfield’s reward for making it through to the third round of the FA Cup is a plum tie against holders Crystal Palace. The Premier League stars probably won’t relish a trip to Moss Ross in January, although they should still have enough to see off the Silkmen… but there’s always a chance for some FA Cup romance. That’s why third-round weekend is such a beloved tradition for football fans. TNT Sports has eight live ties over the third-round weekend, including a tricky trip to Wrexham for Nottingham Forest and, for the 70s Brian Clough nostalgists, Derby v Leeds. There are also two all-Premier League clashes, as Aston Villa visit Spurs and Man Utd host Brighton.

Football: Serie A

Former Chelsea forward Christian Pulisic never really convinced the fans at Stamford Bridge, and the AC Milan fans weren’t sure either when he signed for them. But the USA international has begun 2025/26 in excellent form and his goals have helped carry the rossoneri to the top of Serie A, defying many pundits’ pre-season predictions. He bagged two crucial strikes including the winner as his team came back from 2-0 down to triumph at Torino, as well as scoring the only goal in the derby against Inter and nabbing the winner against champions Napoli. He could have a real impact on the Italian season – as well as on next year’s World Cup, co-hosted by his homeland. AC Milan are in action twice on TNT Sports in the coming month so check out his form, as well as vital games like Inter v Napoli.

Football: Men’s A-League

It’s been a tight and tense start to the Men’s A-League season. There have been a fair few draws as the teams exercised caution, and no one has managed to put a marker down for the campaign yet. Sydney FC are looking strong in the early stages, especially at home, scoring the most and conceding the least, with Englishman Joe Lolley getting among the goals – but they haven’t established a commanding lead at the top. The biggest surprise, considering their record of reaching the finals and winning four championships, is seeing Melbourne Victory down the bottom of the ladder; however, as at the top, they’re still well in touch with the rest. With extensive live coverage every weekend (and midweek days too over the festive period), you can track this exciting league from start to finish on TNT Sports.

Football: Women’s A-League

Watch Women’s A-League football on TNT Sports this month.

Canberra United were among the most successful teams in the early years of the Women’s A-League (or W-League, as it was known), topping the table three times in six years between 2012 and 2017 and winning two Grand Finals. It’s been slim pickings since for the ACT club since, with only a single semi-final appearance, but they’ve put themselves firmly in contention this season with impressive early wins over Perth, Sydney and Melbourne Victory. All-time league record scorer Michelle Heyman is still grabbing the goals at 37, while Emma Robers and new signing Sasha Grove have shored up the defence and Nanako Sasaki influential in midfield. It’s a competitive league, so can they keep going in the face of strong challengers like Melbourne City and Central Coast Mariners? Tennis: Australian Open

Watch the Australian Open on TNT Sports this month.

Tennis fans will be fixing their attention on Melbourne in January for the first Grand Slam of 2026. The 2025 men’s singles final was the last in a Grand Slam not to be contested by Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz; it was Alexander Zverev who faced Sinner, but the German couldn’t stop the Italian winning in straight sets. Things were more varied in 2025’s women’s events, which produced four different Grand Slam singles champions: Madison Keys was arguably the most unexpected, when she beat two-time winner Aryna Sabalenka to become the lowest-ranked Australian Open champ for 18 years. Keys has risen in the rankings since but faces a tough battle to retain her title against Sabalenka, Iga Świątek, Amanda Anisimova et al.

There were a number of British champions at the 2025 tournament. Henry Patten won the men’s doubles with his Finnish partner Harri Heliövaara, while Alfie Hewett took him the wheelchair singles and doubles titles, the latter alongside fellow Brit Gordon Reid. Andy Lapthorne was also champ – again –in the quad wheelchair doubles. Look out for their matches in the later stages of the 2026 tournament (if they progress).

Rugby Union: PREM Rugby

It’s turning out to be another closely fought campaign in the top flight of English men’s rugby, with six clubs all staying within touching distance of the top having played a third of the season’s fixtures. Champions Bath hit the summit after crushing Gloucester 38-17 but promptly lost their next match to Leicester (after leading 17-7), so it seems there’s no danger that they’ll run away with the title. We’re expecting them to win against the invariably hapless Newcastle but over the Christmas period they face tricky matches against Northampton and Exeter. The table may look very different in the early weeks of 2026. It’s tight, it’s exciting, it’s ultra-competitive and we’re loving the live coverage on TNT Sports.

Rugby Union: Premiership Women’s Rugby

Watch Premiership Women’s Rugby on TNT Sports this month.

Bristol Bears got a profile boost last season when the USA’s Olympic star Ilona Maher joined on a short-term deal, but they gained more than just social followers – the American centre scored tries in crucial games, notably home and away wins over Exeter, as the Bears reached the Premiership semi-finals. This season things aren’t going so well: they might have won their first match 74-0 at Leicester but they lost the next four to leave them well off the pace in the table. They need to put some points on the board, starting with their trip to Harlequins in the final match before the winter break. It should be a hard-fought game, with Quins needing a win to keep themselves in the top-four mix.

Motorsport: Formula E

Watch Formula E on TNT Sports this month.

Pascal Wehrlein was fastest in qualifying in São Paulo, but Britain’s Jake Dennis started on pole after a penalty demoted the German to fourth place. And the Andretti driver took full advantage, dominating the race and judging his use of attack mode perfectly. The finish was something of an anti-climax after a late collision brought out the red flag, but Dennis won’t care – he tops the drivers’ championship after the first ePrix, six points ahead of the champion, Nissan’s Oliver Rowland. But there are still 16 exciting races to go, so what will happen at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez in Mexico City? Tune in to TNT Sports on 10 January to find out.

Snooker

The third event in the 2025/26 Home Nations Series takes place at the Meadowbank Sports Centre in Edinburgh. Mark Allen won the English Open while Jack Lisowski took the Northern Ireland title – so who will emerge triumphant in the Scottish Open? China’s Lei Peifan is the defending champ and number one seed, but he’ll face some serious challenges, not least from his countryman and world champion Zhao Xintong (seeded second). Neil Robertson, Kyren Wilson and Mark Williams will all be among the contenders. Next up in January on TNT Sports, it’s the Masters, live from London’s Alexandra Palace.
