Beat stress at Christmas

Christmas Day may be one of the most celebrated days of the year but it can also be one of the most stressful.

Coping mechanisms - particularly when you’re next to an awkward relative at the dinner table or left holding the turkey - are essential for keeping your cool.

Don't fear the festivities - make them work for you with our guide to a stress-free Christmas.

  • Don't forget the festive season is a time to relax and take a break. When you pace yourself, you maintain balance and avoid doing things in excess such as eating or drinking too much.

  • Don't expect miracles with relatives. If you and certain family members are always bickering, avoid known triggers such as contentious subjects. If they do arise, then quickly move onto something else to talk about.

  • Place oil aromatherapy in strategic places to relax. Orange and cinnamon blend particularly well providing a tranquil sensation.

  • Plan after-lunch activities with the family such as playing board games. This way there is less chance of getting into arguments.

  • Make time for yourself. Christmas is a time for everyone to give, not just you. Remind the children that you are not there to slave away for them and that you deserve a rest from work too. Help with the chores could make all the difference.

  • Learn to break conversational patterns that always lead to an old argument rearing its ugly head. Take evasive action and change the subject as smoothly as you can.
