Hello, how are you? I’m back from the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, and I can’t wait to see what happens in the technical world this year.
This week is all about Home Entertainment, but do get your questions in about anything techy around the lounge or study, and we’ll try and answer as many as possible.
Dear LJ,
I have a Hi-8 video camera. Can I record straight onto a DVD through a DVD recorder? Thanks, John, Motherwell
Dear John,
Thanks for your question – you don’t mention which DVD recorder you have, but the vast majority of them have AV inputs on the front that look like a red, white and yellow socket. Yellow carries video and Red and White carry Right and Left Stereo sound.
Without knowing your model, I would guess that your Hi-8 camcorder should have an "AV out" socket, which would be a mini-jack – come to think of it, your Hi-8 Camcorder may even come with the AV-out cable that you have used to view footage on your TV. I should mention that this method works with most camcorders with an analogue AV-out.
Turn on your camcorder and press play, plug the connections you’d normally put in your TV in your DVD recorders “AV IN”, select the channel on your DVD recorder (It might be called AV3), and you should see your footage on your telly. When you get to the part you want to copy, hit record on your DVD recorder, and that should do the trick. Good luck! LJ
Hi LJ,
What is the best way to show/play my digital photos and itunes music stored on my desktop on my Toshiba LCD TV/surround sound amp in a different room. I have a Linksys WRT54G based wifi network. It would be good to also see the iTunes interface on the TV. Ted, Thornbury
Hi Ted,
There has been a lot of talk about trying to connect T'internet with Television, and consumers are moving toward that trend. I (and others) reckon that "moveable media" will be big in 2008.
Your TV and wireless network should support streaming video, photo and audio from your PC - If you’re hell-bent on an Apple interface, then the answer for you would probably be the
Apple TV which should give you what you’re after. Price around £199 for 40GB.
However, Archos have just come out with the Archos TV+ (the launch was yesterday, so you’re among the first to know!). There’s a lot of functionality including the ability to record video in both directions, i.e. from your telly to your Archos box/PC as well as the other way round. Price around £179 for 80GB
here.
Both products are wi-fi friendly, come with a remote control, and sit under your telly.
