Since it was launched by Space Shuttle Discovery in 1990, the Hubble Space Telescope has provided unparalleled insights into the cosmos. Free from atmospheric distortions, its images of galaxies, stars, nebulae and planets are among the clearest ever taken. The results of many observations have challenged existing scientific theories and helped refine new ones. This gallery shows some of the most memorable images captured by the telescope over the last three decades.

8000 light years from Earth, this complex structure within the Carina Nebula contains what appear to be newly forming stars. It is about 7 light years across. Credit: NASA, ESA, and The Hubble Heritage Team (STScI/AURA).
