Setting up a home network

Want to connect more than one computer to the Internet? Then you'll need a router to create a home network and share your connection.

As there are many different ways to set up a home network and hundreds of products such as routers available, Virgin Media are unable to offer specific technical support on these.

However, this guide will give you a good overview and the basic steps to setting up a home network. Sometimes you maybe lucky and it's a case of pluging all the wires and pieces of kit together; othertimes you may need to sift through the manual over a cuppa.

So what’s a router?

A router is a device which connects to your cable modem or set top box and shares the connection received from Virgin.

An example of a wirelese router

Most routers are now wireless so you can share the connection through a radio signal, removing the need of running wires from your router to your computers. So you can now safely browse the Internet from the comfort of your sofa without the fear of clearing your coffee table in one fell swoop. Wireless ultimatly gives you freedom to:

  • set up your desktop computers where you like,
  • use your laptop wherever you like,
  • banish those ugly wires from your home.

You'll also need something called a wireless network card or adapter installed on the computer(s) that you want to share the connection. Some computers now have this already installed, especially laptops. (Look out for "mobile or wireless technology").
