Digital Video camera

There are a number of factors to consider when buying a Digital Video (DV) camera. The first step is to decide which format would best suit your requirements.

  • If you want the device to be very small, then MP4 cameras that record directly onto your hard disk or memory card may be the best bet. These devices have the advantage that you don't require external media.
  • If you are looking for high quality results then you should certainly consider models that use tape formats (DV, miniDV, Sony Digital8 and microMW).
  • If you are looking for ease of use, you might prefer to go down the DVD camcorder route ─ an option that would enable you to play the disc you've just recorded in your DVD player or straight from the camera, cutting out the need for a computer altogether.

As far as other key features are concerned, there are several to bear in mind.

  • The size of the LCD screen is important, particularly if your eyesight isn't marvellous.
  • An optical zoom is very handy too ─ at least a 10X lens is preferable.
  • Depending on how you intend to use the camera, you might also consider whether it has the ability to shoot digital stills or a zoom microphone function for better sound.
  • If you plan on doing a lot of night shooting, you will need a camera equipped for infrared low-light recording.
