Searching for something to feast on this winter? Look no further than this gnarly new series. It’s already got everyone all shook up in the US, and we’ve got it exclusively for Virgin Media customers.

Ash Vs Evil Dead is the telly spin-off of the 80s film franchise. In the original cult classic, The Evil Dead, Ash (Bruce Campbell) and his mates unleash a raft of flesh-eating demons called Deadites on the world, and spend the rest of the trilogy dealing with the dastardly consequences.

And now, he’s back to deal once and for all with what he unleashed. We sat down with Campbell to find out all you need to know…

1. It picks up 30 years later

Ash is working in a dead-end job and living in a trailer park. He’s given up on hunting Deadites – until a fresh plague threatens to destroy mankind, bringing him out of retirement. And Campbell couldn’t be happier: “It’s probably the most fun character there is to play,” he says.

2. Ash is back on chiselled form

Campbell only had a cameo in the 2013 Evil Dead film reboot, so we can’t wait for the man behind the autobiography If Chins Could Kill: Confessions of a B Movie Actor to take centre stage once again.

3. Expect to be quaking in your slippers…

Each episode is a half-hour thrill-fest. Campbell says: “I want to mess with people’s minds. You can grab an audience by the scruff of their necks and force them to look at that screen.”

4. …but it’s not all doom and gloom

Don’t worry, you won’t be cowering behind your sofa all the time. Campbell promises: “The recipe is the right mix. It’s like baking a cake. You know if you use baking powder instead of baking soda, it’s a disaster. So if we get a little dark, we lighten it with humour. And if we get a little loopy, we can hit it with some horror.”

5. The legendary chainsaw hand is returning

In Evil Dead II, a Deadite possesses his right hand and he gains a chainsaw as a replacement – handy for gardening. That’s next year’s Halloween costume sorted then.

6. You’ll want to be Ash’s mate

Ash brings everyman charm to the show. Campbell says: “I think part of the attraction that fans will continue to like is that he’s a good guy. He might be an idiot, but he’s a good guy who is always going to try to do the right thing against ridiculous odds.”

7. He’s got a new crew

The new series introduces upcoming talent – his sidekick, Pablo Simon Bolivar, will be played by Ray Santiago (you may recognise him from Backstrom and Dexter) and Dana DeLorenzo as Kelly Maxwell, who’s previously popped up in 2 Broke Girls.

8. Xena: Warrior Princess, is on Ash’s case

Lucy Lawless, who played Xena: Warrior Princess in the hit 90s series, is back in action. She’ll be playing no-nonsense Ruby Knowby. Watch out Ash – she’s got an axe to grind, blaming him for unleashing the Deadites on the world. “She’s a great addition to the show. She can step in and do anything we need her to do, which is spectacular,” says Campbell.

9. Sam Raimi’s back on board

And he’s directed the pilot. The Spider-Man director, who was the mastermind behind the original film franchise, has returned – as has the ’72 Delta 88, the same car that’s been in all the movies. Welcome back!

10. Don’t expect the Ash vs Freddy vs Jason spin-off any time soon

Rumours have been flying around for years over a hook-up with Freddy Vs Jason – but Campbell’s putting them to bed. “I was interested because I wanted to kill them both, but we were informed that no one is killing anybody and we would only have control over what happens to the Ash character,” he says. “I’m glad we’re back to this again so we can finally do it right.”
