The life and career of Agent Carter

After Steve Rogers was frozen in ice at the end of Captain America: The First Avenger, he awoke nearly 70 years in the future, leaving his beloved Peggy Carter behind. As upsetting as that was for the super solider, it was equally upsetting for us fans who feared we may never see Agent Carter again. Luckily, the popularity of the character proved too much for Marvel to ignore, and now Peggy can't stop popping up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

As we look forward to the second season of Agent Carter beginning on Thursday 28thJanuary at 9pm on Fox, let's take a look back at all of her appearances to date and chronicle her life and career as a kick-ass spy.

Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)

A touching moment between the pair

When we first meet Peggy Carter in 1942 she’s a high-level agent with the Strategic Scientific Reserve, working on the secretive “Project Rebirth”. When she’s not busy fighting HYDRA, she’s punching insolent soldiers in the jaw, firing bullets at Cap’s shield, and continually inspiring Steve Rogers as the pair slowly fall in love.

Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)

*immediately starts doing the funky chicken*

As Captain America’s plane is about to crash in The First Avenger, he and Peggy share a sweet interaction about rescheduling a dance they know they’ll never share. But when the Scarlet Witch plays with his mind at the behest of Ultron, Steve imagines what might have been, before his vision of Peggy fades away and he’s left alone.

Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD (2014-2016)

Carter the Unstoppable Interrogating Machine

We’d already seen Hayley Atwell reprise her role in her own spin-off show before this appearance, but this was actually what happened next for her in the chronological MCU timeline. Featuring in two episodes via flashbacks to 1945, Peggy (a hero of SHIELD’s Agent Simmons) apprehended the show’s then main villain, Daniel Whitehall, who apparently hadn’t aged since then.

Marvel One-Shot: Agent Carter (2013)

An instant comic-book classic

This short film that appeared on the home video release of Iron Man 3 was what led to Agent Carter getting her own series, but it actually chronicles her final days with the SSR. Still underestimated by her misogynist colleagues, Peggy goes on an unauthorised mission, kicks ass, then leaves to form SHIELD with Howard Stark.

Ant-Man (2015)

Older, wiser and still badass

When an angry Hank Pym accuses SHIELD of trying to replicate his shrinking technology in 1989, he confronts the heads of the organisation. Of course that means cameos for John Slattery as an older Howard Stark, and Hayley Atwell, who through makeup and CGI is able to play Peggy Carter at all ages.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)

Age-nt Carter

In a truly heartbreaking scene that underlines their tragic romance, Steve Rogers visits Peggy in a retirement home, finally reuniting the couple after decades apart. Now in her 90s, the former SHIELD agent’s mental deterioration allows her only a few minutes of cogent conversation before her memory fails her.

Marvel’s Agent Carter returns to Fox on Thursday 28th January at 9pm on Fox.
