Console and computer game "Star Wars Battlefront" will induct several elements from upcoming film "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" over a week before its theatrical release.
Main characters and rivals Jyn Erso and Orson Krennic will join the roster of multiplayer action game "Star Wars Battlefront" from December 6 when its "Rogue One: Scarif" expansion goes live.
The timing means that the "Rogue One" update arrives more than a week ahead of its theatrical bow.
Felicity Jones stars as Jyn Erso, part of a team set on stealing plans for the Death Star, a giant spacecraft capable of destroying entire planets.
Opposing her is Ben Mendelsohn's Orson Krennic, a high-ranking Imperial Military officer who is overseeing the project and determined to deliver it regardless of Rebel interference.
Imposing Empire enforcer Darth Vader provides continuity between the "Rogue One" spin-off and the original 1977-1983 trilogy, and the black-clad force-wielder has been part of "Star Wars Battlefront" since its November 2015 release across PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Windows PC.
So were half a dozen other characters and locations from the legacy films, and, while the new leads from 2015's "The Force Awakens" were not, one of its environments was.
With Disney and Lucasfilm eager to keep key plot details of "The Force Awakens" under wraps until the film was released, "Star Wars Battlefront" went so far as making its Battle for Jakku setting available two weeks prior to the film's international release.
The trick here was that its events took place prior to the film, fleshing out its lore without spoiling story or character developments.
The "Rogue One" update is a little different in that it lets players familiarize themselves with not only the film's tropical planet Scarif, via four new maps set within its bounds, but also through getting to grips with the two lead characters in action.
Such a strategy may help increase interest in the "Rogue One" film which shares a plot point and a character with the very first "Star Wars" movie, but otherwise lacks the baton-passing crossover cast of its $2bn box office, record-breaking predecessor "The Force Awakens."
For PlayStation VR, the PlayStation 4's virtual reality headset, there'll be an X-Wing VR Mission, made available for free.
Game publisher Electronic Arts also took the time to remind existing players and those on the fence about its November 18 launch, the "Star Wars Battlefront Ultimate Edition" which includes access to the Scarif pack when it releases, as well as all three previous expansions.
