A Christmas treat for sci-fi fans

16/12/2016TV

Christmas is all about catching up with family and old friends. Well, that and getting lots of presents. So Syfy’s truly embracing the Christmas spirit this week, reacquainting sci-fi TV fans with some of their favourite shows in a veritable advent calendar of adventure treats.

Whether you’re a cheerleader for Buffy Summers’ demon-slaying antics, someone who’s always kept faith with Sam Beckett’s time-bending travels, a brown-coat-wearing Firefly nut, or a dyed-in-the-wool Trekkie, you’ll have the perfect excuse to shut out the real world and nostalgically luxuriate in Syfy’s savvily curated binges. Well, with a small break for opening lots of presents, of course…

On the 19th day of December, Syfy gave to me… a body-hopping time-travel classic!

Watch Quantum Leap, Monday, from 11am, Syfy/HD (CH 135/165). Also available for 30 days in Catch Up > Channels > Syfy

What’s on? A nine-hour pick-and-mix of time traveller Sam Beckett’s (Scott Bakula) most memorable adventures. Including the one where he tackles racial prejudice as a 1950s African-American chauffeur, the two-parter where he becomes himself as a teenager in 1969, and the one where he switches places with his holographic sidekick Al (Dean Stockwell). Oh, boy…

On the 20-24th days of December, Syfy gave to me… a multi-Quadrant-spanning trio of boldly-going space-quest shows!

Watch Star Trek, from Tuesday, 11am, Syfy/HD (CH 135/165). Also available for 30 days in Catch Up > Channels > Syfy

What’s on? A four-day hang-out with courageous Captains Janeway, Sisco and Picard. Includes nine episodes each ofStar Trek spin-off series Voyager and Deep Space Nine, plus a two-day, 18-episode marathon of The Next Generation. The highlights of the highlights? DS9’s hilarious original-series flashback “Trials And Tribble-ations”, and TNG’s “The Best Of Both Worlds” where Picard – gasp! – becomes assimilated by the Borg…

Get in the spirit with… A fine glass of Romulan Ale (as in the limited edition novelty energy drink.)

On the 26th day of December, Syfy gave to me… a myth-plundering, supernatural action adventure!

Watch The Librarians, Boxing Day, 11am, Syfy/HD (CH 135/165). Also available for 30 days in Catch Up > Channels > Syfy

What’s on? Turn Boxing Day into Books-ing Day (so sorry) with the fantasy series that revealed how your local library could well be a stash-house for mythical magical items. Among the quests undertaken by library guardian Rebecca Romijn (X-Men) and co. in this selection, we have those for the Crown of King Arthur and the Loom of Fate, plus the one where they have to rescue Santa Claus (played by Ash Vs Evil Dead’s Bruce Campbell).

Get in the spirit with… A good read of an ancient tome. Or, at least, the dustiest book in your house.

On the 27th day of December, Syfy gave to me… a whip-smart intergalactic western!

Watch Firefly, Tuesday 27 December, from 11am, Syfy/HD (CH 135/165). Also available for 30 days in Catch Up > Channels > Syfy

What’s on? Browncoats assemble! Here are eight instalments of Joss Whedon’s brilliant, beloved, but all-too-short-lived space-opera, including the feature-length pilot, which kicks off the Serenity crew’s western-style adventures after they unwittingly pick up the weirdly augmented River Tam (Arrow’s Summer Glau). Also here is fan-favourite episode “Out Of Gas”, which is packed with origin-story flashbacks.

Get in the spirit with… A Mandarin-English dictionary, so you can fully understand the crew’s colourful curses.

On the 28th and 29th days of December, Syfy gave to me… a blissful bout of blood-sucker butt-kicking!

buffy.gif

Watch Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Wednesday 28 and Thursday 29 December, from 11am, Syfy/HD (CH 135/165). Also available for 30 days in Catch Up > Channels > Syfy

What’s on? Only two days of one of the greatest TV shows ever broadcast! What better way to see out the demonic year that was 2016 than with a reminder that ridding the world of evil can be fun? So join Buffy Summers (I Know What You Did Last Summer‘s Sarah Michelle Gellar) and the gang in such classics as “The Zeppo”, “Fool For Love” and the musical “Once More, With Feeling”.

On the 30th day of December, Syfy gave to me… a deep-space mystery thriller!

dark-matter.gif

Watch Dark Matter, Friday 30 December, from 11am, Syfy/HD (CH 135/165). Also available for 30 days in Catch Up > Channels > Syfy

What’s on? Nine parts of the cerebral, intriguing sci-fi thriller, including the first episode, where the crew of spaceship Raza awaken from hyper-sleep with their memories wiped and no idea if they’re good guys or bad guys. Elsewhere, there’s the seventh episode, where they finally gain access to the ship’s secret room, and the devastating season 1 finale, where the traitor in their midst is revealed.

Get in the spirit with… A bar of 100 per cent dark chocolate. None more dark.
