The Oscars have come and gone. La La Land – sorry Moonlight – walked away with the Best Picture Award, which signalled another win for the indies. Yes we all love a blockbuster, but we always need to remember the smaller guys. So without further delay, here are the ten best hidden gems on Virgin Movies this March…

In A Valley Of Violence

Not everyone will be familiar with the name Ti West. But West is responsible for directing a handful of excellent horror movies including The Innkeepers and The House Of The Devil. In A Valley Of Violence sees him tackle the Western genre head on, with a great cast including Ethan Hawke. If you don’t know him already, now is your chance.

Justice League Dark

R rated comic book movies are hot right now. And after Batman: The Killing Joke, Justice League Dark sees another quality adult themed animated movie from Warner Bros. Featuring alternate, “dark” characters from the Justice League, including the legendary Swamp Thing, this film proves there’s life left in DC yet.

Screened at the Cannes Film Festival, Krisha is hard-hitting and at times harrowing. Featuring excellent performances, and assured direction from Trey Edward Shults, a name that is definitely one to look out for.

Krisha is available on Virgin Movies from Monday 13th March

Nocturnal Animals

From fashion designer-turned director Tom Ford, the Oscar-nominated Nocturnal Animals boasts an exceptional cast including Amy Adams, Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Shannon. Dark, mysterious and tense, Nocturnal Animals is a gem that craves to be found by a wider audience.

Nocturnal Animals is available on Virgin Movies from Monday 13th March

Queen of Katwe

Let’s be honest, Disney is known for many things, but drama is probably not one of them. But with Queen Of Katwe, we have a true story about a Ugandan girl whose life is turned around by the game of chess, that is both moving and inspirational. David Oyelowo and Lupita Nyong’o shine, but young Madina Nalwanga exhibits real potential.

Queen of Katwe is avaiable on Virgin Movies from Sunday 19th March

Operation Avalanche

More often than not, independent films are quirky and different to the norm, and Operation Avalanche is no exception. Screened at Sundance, this film tells the story of the CIA’s plan to fake the moon landing. Both fascinating and funny, this is what hidden gems are all about.

Operation Avalanche is available on Virgin Movies from Monday 20th March

The Fits

With a title befitting a 1970s David Cronenberg movie, The Fits has been receiving rave reviews. Part horror, part coming-of-age drama, and almost entirely without dialogue, this little know independent gem has all the makings of a film that could easily be missed, but definitely shouldn’t be.

The Fits is available on Virgin Movies from Monday 20th March

There was a time when a movie directed by Oliver Stone demanded every movie fan’s attention. Unfortunately his recent track record changed everything. That being said, this film about Edward Snowden and NSA's illegal surveillance techniques is something of a return to form for the Oscar winning director. While not classic Stone, Snowden show’s glimpses of what made him great.

Snowden is available on Virgin Movies from Friday 31st March

Bleed For This

Another true story, and another film that was criminally overlooked at the box office. Telling the story of a world champion Italian American boxer who broke his neck in a horrific car crash, only to recover and make a comeback, Bleed For This is a remarkable tale of real courage, featuring a massively pumped up Miles Teller.

Bleed For This is available on Virgin Movies from Monday 27th March

The Edge Of Seventeen

As feature film directorial debuts go, The Edge Of Seventeen from Kelly Fremon Craig is hard to beat. A Golden Globe nominee, and starring Hailee Steinfeld, Blake Jenner and Woody Harrelson, this coming-of-age high school story delivers the drama and laughs in equal measures.

The Edge Of Seventeen is available on Virgin Movies from Monday 27th March
