5 sports stars ready to wow you!

22/06/2017Sport

The sporting superheroes are out in force on Virgin TV this week and they’re ready to have you holding onto the edge of your sofa! From fast-paced motorsport action and blockbuster international cricket, to a Wimbledon dress rehearsal and an explosive night of UFC over in the States, you’re more than sorted when it comes to fantastic fireworks on the box.

But who are the stars you should be keeping a keen eye on? Whether it’s the household names or the awesome athletes that might have slipped under your radar, we pick out five faces that are all set to cause a splash…

TOMAS-BERDYCH.jpg

Aegon Championships, continues Thursday, 1pm, BBC Two/HD (CH 102/162) + 11.30am, Eurosport 1/HD (CH 523/521)

Hands up, who saw that coming? A whole host of big names tumbled out of the Aegon Championships at the start of the week, with Andy Murray’s defeat to world number 90 Jordan Thompson the biggest shock. Enter world number 14 Tomáš Berdych. The hard-hitting Czech now has a great chance to go all the way at Queen’s this year, which would set him up nicely for Wimbledon.

Max-Verstappen-logo_V2.jpg

2017 FORMULA 1 AZERBAIJAN GRAND PRIX, Sunday, from 1pm, Channel 4/HD (CH 104/141) + Sky Sports F1®/HD (CH 518/508)

Formula 1’s boy wonder has something to prove in Baku this weekend following an underwhelming start to the season. Big things were expected of Verstappen this year, yet he’s currently languishing in sixth place in the standings. However, let’s not lose sight of the fact that the Dutchman is only 19 years old. While he’s tearing around the track with the world’s best racers on Sunday afternoon, his mates will probably be playing video games in their bedrooms.

Felice-Herrig.jpg

UFC Fight Night: Chiesa v Lee, Sunday night/Monday morning, 2am, BT Sport 3/HD (CH 533/529)

You may not have heard the name Felice Herrig, but make no mistake: this MMA fighter wears her heart on her sleeve and is very much the real deal. The American has faced some tough battles, both inside and outside of the octagon, during her long career, and you can watch her in action this Saturday as part of the UFC’s latest hard-hitting extravaganza from Oklahoma. Headlined by Michael Chiesa and Kevin Lee, it’s set to be an unmissable night of drama, so set a recording!

Alex-Hales.jpg

England v South Africa, from Friday, 4.30pm, Sky Sports 2/HD (CH 512/502)

Twenty20 cricket is all about players hitting the ball far and wide with the bat – and that’s just what Alex Hales loves doing. England will be looking to their swashbuckling opener to propel them to victory in the second and third matches of their series against South Africa, and the hosts will also be out to restore some national pride following the ODI team’s disappointing semi-final exit in the ICC Champions Trophy. But it won’t be easy against the determined tourists.

Maverick-Vinales.jpg

Grand Prix Of Assen, Sunday, 11.15am, BT Sport 2/HD (CH 532/528)

With a name like Maverick Viñales, you just know this fella is a star in the making. At just 22, the Spaniard is hot property in the world of MotoGP™ right now, sitting proudly at the top of the table heading into this weekend’s big race in the Netherlands. The feeling is that he’s destined for greatness, but judging by his scintillating form this season, he could get there quicker than expected.
