Golf tournaments don’t come any bigger than The Open Championship, and this year the world’s greatest players will be assembling like sporting superheroes at Royal Birkdale to battle it out for the iconic Claret Jug.
There’s also over a million quid up for grabs for the winner. But make no mistake: golf’s oldest major is all about tradition, prestige and kudos. End up at the top of the leaderboard – like Sweden’s Henrik Stenson did after beating Phil Mickelson last year – and you’ll have cemented your spot in the history books.
As if you needed more convincing that The Open is one of the must-watch annual events in the sporting universe, this year is all set to be one of the most competitive fields there’s ever been. Challengers to Stenson’s crown include world number one Dustin Johnson, 2014 champion Rory McIlroy, Masters winner Sergio García and US Open hero Brooks Koepka. Add swinging superstars like Jason Day, Jordan Spieth and Justin Rose into the mix and you’ve got yourself a fascinating four days of action that’s not to be missed.
