Despite already being out in Japan this was one of the focuses of Nintendo's pre-E3 media briefings and justifiably so. The whole game, which uses The Wind Waker style cel-shading, is now controlled with the stylus, which despite initial misgivings seems to work far better than expected.

Already a huge hit in Japan, almost on a par with the Brain Training games, the idea here is that you're improving your hand-to-eye co-ordination, peripheral vision and generally giving your eyes a thorough workout, according to the theories of a Japanese professor of sports medicine.

A real gift to hardcore fans, Konami's first new Contra (known variously as Gryzor and Super Probotector in the UK) looks like the perfect update of the old arcade and SNES classic with gorgeously animated 2D graphics and intense shoot 'em-up action across both screens.

It's the team-up fans have been dying to see for years - even if it's not how they imagined Mario and Sonic first meeting up. For some reason it's out this year and with input from both Sega and Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto it may well be the surprise hit at Christmas.

Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings

Although the story is a direct sequel to the PS2 game, with Vaan and Penelo now sky pirates with their own airship, the gameplay here is more of a real-time strategy than a role-playing game, with elements of Final Fantasy Tactics and more obscure classics like Ogre Tactics.
