There's always good hair...
Final Fantasy X-2 is the only one to continue the same story from one game to the next, with the only other commonalities being the basic gameplay and a few fan favourite cameos such as the yellow ostrich-like chocobos and the reuse of character names like Cid, Biggs and Wedge.
Airships of one type or another always make an appearance and most of the games feature a more fantasy than Sci-Fi style world.
Since every game is essentially a stand alone title (even though Final Fantasy XII actually takes place in the same fictional world as spin-off Final Fantasy Tactics) it means that each game can be approached with out any prior knowledge of the others.
"The death of one of the main characters in Final Fantasy VII is regarded as one of the most dramatic story events in the whole of video gaming."
After all, despite the movie quality cut scenes, huge game worlds and amazing graphics it is still the characters and stories that remain the series' most enduring feature.
The death of one of the main characters in Final Fantasy VII is still regarded as one of the most dramatic story events in the whole of video gaming and although it may be a little po-faced at times Final Fantasy XII's plot is no less epic in scope (and far better translated).
