A year or so ago common wisdom had it that the PC games market was dead.

There were very few high profile games coming out and almost all of those were first person shooters.

Considering the already high costs of a gaming PC, compared to home consoles, and the increasingly confusing array of hardware needed the only sensible outcome to it all seemed to be to give up on PC games completely.

But that's not what's happened, in fact it's been quite the reverse with the variety of PC games starting to expand again and titles like World of WarCraft and The Sims becoming the bestselling video games of any kind.

"Next-gen console is big but its future isn't too bright."

In fact the worm has turned so far he's grown teeth, with some experts claiming it's consoles that may be the endangered species - with the expensive Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 so far completely failing to outsell last gen consoles such as the PlayStation 2 or the purposefully non-PC like Wii.

In fact controversial PC developer John Romero, who's worked on classics including Wolfenstein 3D, Doom and Quake has gone on record as saying that, "Next-gen console is big but its future isn't too bright, with the emergence of cheap PC multi-core processors and the big change the PC industry will go through during the next five years to accommodate the new multi-core-centric hardware designs."
