Wik and the Fable of Souls

Perhaps the most interesting games of all though are those that are as anonymous and unknown as the companies that make them. Games like Outpost Kaloki X, Wik and the Fable of Souls, Marble Blast Ultra, Cloning Clyde and Assault Heroes have gained an audience vastly greater in size than they could ever have managed as either a retail game or even a PC download – which is how some of them started off.

Unencumbered by the financial limitations of $10 million dollar retail games these titles can afford to be far more experimental and off the wall.

The upcoming line-up looks even more interesting with retro revamp Wing Commander Arena sitting alongside Every Extend Extra Extreme (which started life as free PC game, became a flop PSP game and has now followed Lumines onto Xbox Live) and Boom Boom Rocket (a variation on PS2 launch title Fantavision from Project Gotham Racing and Geometry Wars developers Bizarre Creations).

There’s also giant mech game War World; the debut of famed Flash game N+; Guardian Heroes homage Castle Crashers from the makers of Alien Hominid; cult Dreamcast 2D shoot ‘em-up Ikaruga from the equally cult developer Treasure; and perhaps most intriguingly of all Space Giraffe – the latest psychedelic shooter from legendary Welsh hippy programmer Jeff Minter.
