Most of the baby's vital organs are in place and formed, and the remaining pregnancy time is for growth in size. However, the lungs are still very immature. The facial features are more prominent now, including eyelids, lips, nose and chin. The baby's skin gradually becomes more opaque this month and their skills are developing - he or she can suck, take 'practice breaths' and grasp with their hands. By the end of the seventh month, the baby is about 35 centimetres long, and weighs about a kilogram (just over two pounds).
At this antenatal appointment, blood pressure will be checked, symptoms that may indicate pre-eclampsia - swollen ankles, feet or hands - will be monitored and a blood test for anaemia may be suggested. If a pregnant woman turns out to be suffering from anaemia, it can usually be treated with iron supplements.
It is important for mums-to-be to take care of their skin as it stretches. It may itch or feel uncomfortable, which can be alleviated by crème baths and moisturisers. Unfortunately, creams have not yet been proven to help prevent stretch marks, which are due to changes deep down in the skin. Nevertheless, massages can be especially soothing at this time, although when opting for an aromatherapy massage, care needs to be taken since not all essential oils are suitable for pregnant women. Mums-to-be should also maintain good levels of hydration by drinking lots of water, which is essential for all round good health
