Phossy jaw
‘Phossy jaw’ was a condition attributed to matchworkers of the 19th century who developed brain damage and jaw wastage caused by their exposure to the white phosphorus found in matches. ‘Phossy jaw’ was one of the causes of the London matchgirls’ strike of 1888.
