The royals were in on the children's book thing early. Prince Charles scored an early success with The Old Man Of Lochnagar, but it was his sister-in-law who struck gold with a series about a little helicopter called Budgie.
Inspired by her helicopter lessons (something we can all relate to there), the Budgie The Little Helicopter series became a worldwide hit with a spin-off TV series. Budgie was retired in 1996, but she still writes books for children, most recently the Little Red series.
Are they any good? Not bad - popular and innocuous.
