Cortina Mk1
As publicity stunts go, driving half a dozen of your latest model down a bobsleigh run is a daring one with no guarantee that they will make it to the end. But this is just what Ford did when it launched the new Cortina. The car has enjoyed a special place in the annals of British motoring ever since the first one was launched in 1962.
Ford of Britain famously took an Austin Mini to pieces and costed it up, concluding that makers BMC must be losing money on each one made.
Thus dissuaded from trying to compete with the enormously popular model, it decided to concentrate on the family car market, taking on the Vauxhall Victor and Morris Oxford.
The Cortina looked light years ahead of its staid rivals thanks to its American inspired styling and all the variants; two-door, four-door and estate offered a lot for the money, selling just shy of a million units in four years.
