Bugatti Type 57S Atalante
Let's start with a vintage classic: This two seater Bugatti Type 57S Atalante from 1937 sold at auction at Bonhams in Paris for a touch over £3 million on February 7th.
The rare model - only 17 were made - was owned by the appropriately named Harold Carr, a reclusive surgeon from Newcastle. It was already 18 years old when he bought the car for £895 in 1955.
He last drove it in 1960, if the tax disc is any indication, before it sat under a veil of dust in his garage for 48 years.
He knew its value all along and recieved frequent offers from car collectors who knew where the car was. His response to the offers, which were often left with neighbours after he refused to answer the door, was simply to tear them up.
