Fearless, handsome and charming, Mike Hawthorn drove the way he lived - hard and on the edge. Hawthorn stood out amongst the crowd - his mop of blond hair, white racing overalls and bow tie made him recognisable, but allied to his six foot two frame it made him unmissable. Hawthorn loved the glamour and parties, but he also loved to win; beating the mighty Fangio in only his first season. He immediately retired after his Championship win, but he couldn't shake off his racing ways and was killed in a needless road accident the next year aged just 29.
