Any movie portraying Nazis in a sympathetic light is going to stir up some controversy and Brian Singer’s tale of the valiant attempts to assassinate Hitler is no exception.
To start with, Cruise’s casting as the hero Colonel von Stauffenberg received much opposition from German politicians and the Von Stauffenberg family because of the actors’ practice of Scientology (a organisation considered a dangerous cult by German authorities). Filming was then hampered by complaints from members of the public offended by the use of Swastikas on set, members of the crew suing for $11million when the side panel of a truck they were riding broke and the movie (apparently) going $20 million over budget. Phew!
