Hovering menacingly over the White House, alien spacecrafts permanently relocate 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Everywhere.
Nothing says "We're under attack and powerless to do anything about it" more to the Americans than seeing the White House get turned into an expensive driveway. It was a winning shock tactic, the money shot made especially for the trailer that helped turn Independence Day into a massive hit. Roland Emmerich repeats the trick with 2012, this time wiping away the presidential palace using an overturned super-destroyer as a swat.
