District 9 v Alien Nation

District 9 is one of 2009's highlights, but the suspiciously familiar Alien Nation, starring James Caan, has been there and done that.

Both movies deal with the consequences of aliens taking refuge on earth and how they interact with humankind. The earthlings don't exactly roll out the welcome banners and the movies examine the xenophobia the aliens face. District 9 is a more obvious allegory for apartheid in South Africa and the title is a reference to the notorious District Six in Cape Town, which was designated "whites only".
