Having sustained a knee injury, Charlize was forced to give up on a ballet career so moved to Los Angeles to pursue modelling instead. She kicked up a fuss when a teller refused to cash a much-needed cheque, catching the eye of a talent manager queuing behind her. She was soon enrolled in acting school and an Oscar followed.
