Denzel Washington interview

VM: Was it gratifying to win an Oscar for Training Day after so many near-misses?

Denzel Washington: My mother says, "Man gives the award, God gives the reward", so I don't concern myself with awards, I really don't. I think in the case of Training Day I had a "Yeah, whatever" attitude about it. I'd been to the party enough times to know it really didn't matter. But the next day I went to the gym and there was a young actor there who was really excited for me. I was like, "Whatever", and he said, "Maybe you feel that way, but not the rest of us. When you didn't win for The Hurricane, we almost collapsed - if he's not going to win, what chance do we have? When you won, it made us feel like we had a shot." So you never know how you're going to affect people. Maybe it doesn't affect me that way, but it's not always just about me.

VM: Do you think the fact you and Halle Berry both won Oscars will change things in Hollywood?

Denzel Washington: I think the bottom line is that she and I won because we had good parts to play, and black or white good parts are hard to come by. A good actor with a good opportunity has a shot; without the opportunity it doesn't matter how good you are, if you don't have a good juicy role you won't be there on the night. Hopefully there will be more opportunities, and I'm trying to create some by producing and developing material.

VM: Such as?

Denzel Washington: I'm going to direct a film about a little black college in East Texas who in 1935 were the best debating team in the country - they beat everybody. I'm also developing the Sammy Davis Jr story, but I am NOT going to play Sammy myself!

VM: What's the strangest thing that's ever happened to you?

Denzel Washington: When I was a child I thought I saw an angel. I woke up one night, and it had wings and kinda looked like my sister. I walked over to the door and opened the door so some light could come into the room, and it sort of faded away. I asked my mother about it, and she said it was probably my Guardian Angel. So I've always felt protected. It was as real as you are in front of me now; that's the God's honest truth.
