Long live The Queen

Forest Whitaker and Dame Helen Mirren.

It was a right royal gala at last night's BAFTA Awards with Dame Helen Mirren being crowned Best Actress for her portrayal of our Queen Lizzie in The Queen. The film was also awarded the honour of Best Film.

It was also a triumphant night for another, less celebrated leader as Forest Whitaker was named Best Actor for his role as brutal Ugandan dictator Idi Amin in The Last King Of Scotland.

The film also picked up additional BAFTAs for Best Adapted Screenplay and Outstanding British Film of the Year.

Other notable winners were Little Miss Sunshine (Best Original Screenplay, Alan Arkin – Best Supporting Actor), Dreamgirls (Jennifer Hudson – Best Supporting Actress), United 93 (Paul Greengrass – Best Director), Pan’s Labyrinth (Best Film in a Foreign Language), Happy Feet (Best Animated Film), Children Of Men (Best Cinematography) and Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest (Best Special Effects.)

Daniel Craig

Daniel Craig.

The biggest upset of the night was for Daniel Craig and Casino Royale who, though nominated for nine awards, received only one, for Best Sound.

Eva Green, however, who played the sultry Bond girl Vesper Lynd, won the Rising Star Award.

Craig would have been the first Bond to ever receive a BAFTA.
