Ridley Scott's movie saw the real-life Harlem drugs baron given a sympathetic treatment, with Denzel Washington's portrayal showcasing a man with a strong business ethic who cleverly thwarts the Mob and corrupt cops to establish his empire. Lucas's own spin of the American Dream is thwarted by Russell Crowe's detective Richie Roberts, but such is his charm the first guy to greet him upon his release from prison is Roberts himself.
