Springsteen's biggest-selling album couched tales of bitter social disaffection within upbeat, radio-friendly anthems, embracing the spirit of the Eighties with glossy production and the incorporation of synthesizers

Best tracks:

Dancing In The Dark
Born In The U.S.A.
Glory Days

Top facts:

  • Born In The U.S.A. and No Surrender have both become entangled with politics - the former when Ronald Reagan mistakenly interpreted it as a patriotic anthem and praised Springsteen on his campaign trail, and the latter when John Kerry used it during his 2004 presidential campaign.

  • The appearance in 1984's Dancing In The Dark video of Courteney Cox, jiving onstage with Springsteen, is often credited with helping to launch her career. Fans of The Fresh Prince Of Bel Air may also notice the influence of Cox and Springsteen's cheesy moves upon "the Carlton dance".

  • Born In The U.S.A. was the very first commercially released CD to be manufactured in the US rather than imported from Japan.
