Suede may have kickstarted it, Blur refined it, but Britpop crashed into public consciousness because of this, Oasis' snarling debut. Rescued from lives on the dole or in dead end jobs by the promise music might be their redemption, the Gallaghers – singer Liam and songwriter Noel – created a debut that referenced classic British music. The raw of the Stones, the Pistols' punk sneer, the pop nous of the Beatles, the Smiths' northern wit – it was all here.

Top facts:
- The album almost never made it. Troubled sessions with producer Dave Batchelor in Wales' Monnow Studios had Noel Gallagher on the phone to management proclaiming the album wasn’t working. Sessions in five other studios followed, before producer Mark Coyle rescued the songs.
- Released in August 1994, Definitely Maybe was an instant hit, selling 100,000 copies on its first four days to become the fastest-selling British album in history.
- Creation - £2m in debt at the time – realised Oasis were a band connecting to an audience that ignored the music press. When the album was released, they advertised in football magazines and on match programmes. Even dance music magazine Mixmag gave the album five stars.
