A cinematic prog-rock exploration of epic proportions, Pink Floyd's multi-million selling masterpiece established the band as one of the world's biggest acts and set the benchmark in modern recording and production

Top facts:

  • The album was unusual for featuring now infamous snippets of dialogue throughout. Roadie Chris Adamson is responsible for the speech that opens the album: "I've been mad for f**king years, absolutely years, over the edge for yonks". Executive road manager Peter Watts (and father of actress Naomi Watts) is behind the laughter during Brain Damage and Speak to Me. Some speech by Paul and Linda McCartney was also recorded but never included in the final version.

  • Ever heard of a phenomenon called "Dark Side Of The Rainbow"? Pink Floyd fans started to notice that if you watched The Wizard Of Oz while playing The Dark Side Of The Moon, the album provided a bizarrely fitting soundtrack, with certain images seeming to synchronise with the music and lyrics. The band members say that any parallels are purely coincidental, but the rumours of a strange connection between the two works persist to this day.

  • Pink Floyd were huge Monty Python fans and were said to have regularly stopped recording sessions in order to watch the TV programmes. What's more, some of the profits made from sales of The Dark Side Of The Moon were invested into the making of the movie Monty Python And The Holy Grail.
