Capturing Prince at his most ambitious, this sprawling double album showcases the kind of multi-genre mastery that has inspired the description "pop genius"
Top facts:
- Sign "O" The Times was originally intended to be a triple-LP entitled Crystal Ball, but was trimmed down at the behest of Prince's risk-averse record label.
- The tracks Housequake, Strange Relationship and If I Was Your Girlfriend were originally part of an unreleased album called Camille, in which Prince's vocals were sped up to mimic the female voice. Prince intended to release the record without any mention of his own name, but later decided to absorb some of the tracks into Sign "O" The Times, keeping the feminised vocals.
- Sign "O" The Times was outsold five times over by 1984's Purple Rain, but is still critically regarded as Prince's finest hour.
