Top facts:
- The album's distinctive artwork and photography is the hand of Gus Van Sant, acclaimed director of Good Will Hunting, To Die For and My Own Private Idaho. The band hooked up with Van Sant again in 2007 to shoot the video for Desecration Smile.
- I Could Have Lied was reportedly written following the fallout of Anthony Kiedis' brief relationship with Sinead O'Connor.
- The lyrics "There's a River born to be a giver / Keep you warm won't let you shiver / His heart is never gonna wither" in Give It Away are a reference to River Phoenix, a close friend of the band who had recorded music with both Flea and John Frusciante before his death in 1993.
