The rise of gangsta rap meant the end of the gentle, hippy-ish Daisy Age hip-hop championed by De La Soul on their 1989 debut 3 Feet High And Rising. Returning in 1991, the Long Island trio pretended to chronicle their own demise on De La Soul Is Dead but their supposed obituary was an album of rare loveliness and invention.
