Liverpool bands
The Frankies ruled 1984 with their mixture of controversy, wit, sloganeering and merchandise (who can forget those Relax! T-Shirts?). Their first single Relax was slowly moving up the top 10 when Radio 1 decided to ban it, after DJ Mike Read objected to its sexual lyrics (which nobody had appeared to notice until then). This, and its hilariously OTT video, propelled it to number one where it was only toppled by the follow-up single, Two Tribes. Later, only Band Aid kept Frankie’s epic The Power of Love off the Christmas number one slot.
