Should Coldplay split up?

Is it time to call it a day for Coldplay?

Chris Martin has hinted he thinks the fifth Coldplay album Mylo Xyloto could be the band's last.

I always feel like each record is our last, but at the moment I'm at the stage where I really mean it

In an interview with Billboard magazine, he said: "I always feel like each record is our last, but at the moment I'm at the stage where I really mean it.

"I just can't imagine how we would do another one because we've thrown everything into this one.

"I feel proud of our band. We're just so grateful and very driven. How long that will last, I don't know."

Pretty cryptic, we know, but after 10 years as the UK's biggest band, maybe it is time for Coldplay to call it a day.

The case for:

Are people just a bit bored of Coldplay now? They might be one of the UK's biggest bands, but can you honestly remember how their latest single went? Or do you just want them to belt out Yellow again?

They were never the most exciting band to begin with but there's definitely a stagnant air surrounding them now. Their new album might be different to what they've done before, but can it be equal in quality, or even better? Judging by their last single, Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall, it's difficult to imagine it will.

The case against:

Coldplay have become the kind of British institution much loved around the world. Like the queen, but without the controversy and with marginally better outfits.

They're a massive band, who have the power to keep the British music industry afloat on their own. Their last album, Viva La Vida (Or Death And All His Friends) was one of the biggest selling albums of 2008, and 2009. Not many acts can boast the same global appeal and longevity that Coldplay enjoy.

And for a band that have been together for 10 years, Coldplay are still innovators – they're not churning out the same piano ballads they were in 2001. Each album has seen some musical progression, without them losing the charm which made them stars in the first place. There's plenty of life in the old girl yet.
