Whitney Houston dies
The singer had long been plagued with troubles, but the cause of death is currently unknown.
Whitney's heyday was in the 1980s when she burst onto the pop scene with the infectious hit I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me) in 1987. She influenced a host of female singers, including Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera and many others. Jennifer Hudson once said Whitney Houston taught her the difference between "being able to sing and knowing how to sing."
But latterly, her life seemed to spiral out of control. Her marriage to Bobby Brown was seen by many as the start of her downfall. Rumours of hard drug use, including crack cocaine, were rife at this time.
She had Brown had one daughter together before divorcing in 2006.
A host of celebrities left tributes for the singer on Twitter, including Nicola Roberts, who merely tweeted "no, no, no."
Olly Murs called her "one of the best singers ever."
While Rebecca Ferguson said: "my idol heartbroken no no no no no can't believe it."
