Alanis Morissette - The Collection review

What would Christmas be without the obligatory slew of Greatest Hits albums, eh? And as any canny record executive knows, these things don't shift unless you sneak on a bonus track which the hardcore fans can't hear anywhere else. Cynical? Perhaps. That said, if you've ever taken a passing interest in Canadian angst-warbler Morissette but still never felt the urge to actually buy one of her albums, then this collection (handily titled The Collection) separates the wheat from the chaff for you with minimum fuss.

There's a sprinkling of tracks from across her four key studio albums, plus cuts from her MTV Unplugged recording and three soundtrack songs lifted from Dogma, City Of Angels and the recent De-Lovely. Bonus track Crazy, a cover of Seal's 1991 chart-topper, sadly seems more dated than the original, drenched in reverb and choked by an over-indulgent melée of guitars and synths, but skip that and you'll find some classics here which, if nothing else, remind you of Morissette's impressive heyday.
